going LPG

Post by Gravitypilot » Mon Nov 15, 2010 12:21 pm

Im going to move forward with my plans on this as i have been thinking about it over the weekend..

i plan to keep the RS for at least 2 years and will easily get my money back... the fact i have an LPG station only 4 miles away and i can pump my own gas from home is also a plus :-)

a while ago i used to work in LPG and still have some good contacts so i reckon i can do the conversion with the best equipment *BRC - plug and drive* with 16 injectors (doubling up the injectors to the potential is greater for future plans :-)), 2 LPG rails, 2 vaporisers and all the other gear for under 1.5-2k.. a custom conversion like this would cost a <beep> load more more than this in the real world and would not be anywhere near as good ( with 8 injectors etc).. the BRC lpg ecu's are so good now that even with little config we should be able to achieve the same power if not more on LPG... i will dyno it on lpg also...

the only sticking point at the moment is batt relocation and of course engine bay space...

im getting a bit fed up with 200 miles from a tank also... so with the the petrol tank combined with the LPG tank i should get a nice range boost :-)...

i think in the future if i do sell it will also be a very good selling point for the car

will update some pics when i get cracking

I would do it,

lpg + warranty = running cost of a modeo

I ran 2 x beemers on lpg for over 3 years.. A normal 540i and a supercharged one... Both dynoed 10-20bhp less on gas.. But nothing bad..

Lpg is flavoured with onion or garlic and has a strong smell. Its just propane orange bottle

I'm also considering going LPG. My pal bought an X5 4.4i and routinely gets over 35mpg on gas. I'm looking into gas install deals at the moment. Are there still grants or subsidies available?

The x5 4.4 is the same engine as the 540i... On lpg , the standard one did about 19 mpg on gas.. And around 25mpg on petrol.. But thats the eqivalent of 40mpg plus price wise

Your mates x5 would do less than the 540i becuase aerodynamic as a skip and much heavier .. Prob 16/17mpg on gas price equivalent of around 35mpg

I would not trust anyone to lpg my rs.. Its only becuase i used to work in the industry and can do it will a little help from my mate who can also get ot certified after.... The mist important thing for me is to go to town with 16 injectors and 2 vaporisers ( twice as much as a normal conversion on a v8) .. but the fueling potential is there for much higher power if i ever go diwn the manual route.. also want it to be uber neat job like factory look so i hope we can achieve this

A custom conversion with the above mentioned brc kit would cost over 3-5k if anyone would take it on.. But i dont think anyone has doubled up injectors in the way that we are going to its going to cost probs over 2k in kit alone

There is a RS 6 already with LPG and it made more power with LPG then without at the MRC dyno day...

Yes we know its been done before

But not in this way with 16 high flow brc injectors and a load of other bits and pieces.. Having a twin bank of injectors will give massive fueling potential if i want to go down the manual route in the near future :-)

You'll have to use a pair of cone air filter as the standard air box had to be altered to get over the 8 injectors ..

Grizz, thanks for the input.. Do yoi mean like twin induction kit and get rid of the air boxes to make space?
