Help gerabox my has gone all wonky!!!!

Post by woodlum » Tue Aug 10, 2010 9:54 pm

My gearbox started playing up today, it started banging into second at low speeds and has got steadily worse until any more than 1500 / 200 rpm and it jumps out of gear then bangs into gear and the gearshift lights on the dash all go a solid red colour!
It happened on a really steep hill first time and it barely made it to the top!
connected my mates vagcom (not proper lead Rosstech lead but seams to work) and it threw up a couple of codes, does anyone know what they mean and is it terminal for my babies box?
Car has 52k on clock and full service history, no gearbox oil change to my knowledge.

Codes it showed up:

17114 GEAR RATIO MONITORING : INCORRECT GEAR RATIO P0730-3500

ABS MENU

11119 GEAR RECOGNITION SIGNAL 35-10

00532 SUPPLY VOLTAGE B+

Confused and very very worried :( :( :( :( :( :(

Sounds like your gearbox is confused and worried as well!

Hope it doesn't turn out too serious chap..

I've got an oil leak down near there somewhere, just hope that isn't too serious.. :?

Did a quick google of 17114 vag, and I'm sorry to say that it seems your gearbox is most likely dead :(

this is the stuff of nightmares for us rs6 owners. Especially if you are like me and don't have waranty. I feel for you mate :(

Quick get a warranty! Just make sure you take the warranty geezer out for the test-drive in flappy paddle mode :lol: :wink:

Clear the faults first, some of them may be old. See what comes back. The 17114 code is when the TCU was expecting to see a different speed at the output to what you got.
17114 / P0730
Gear/transmission ratio monitoring
Wrong transmission ratio.

The gear monitoring system in the gearbox control unit checks the transmission ratios by comparing the engine output speed and gearbox output speed. This fault is displayed if an incorrect transmission ratio (implausibility) is detected.

Possible cause of fault:

ATF level not OK
ATF dirty
Brake slipping/defective or solenoid valve dirty/defective
Gearbox input speed sender -G182- defective
Gearbox output speed sender -G195- defective
Wrong or incorrectly coded automatic gearbox control unit -J217-

Cheers shop,

We did this and it came back straight away after a quick drive, I've got it booked in for a look and oil change but not until next week.
Not driving it until then.

17114/P0730/001840 - Gear Ratio Monitoring: Incorrect Gear Ratio
Possible Symptoms

* Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) ON

Possible Causes

* Transmission Fluid contaminated
* Transmission faulty (Mechanical Problem)

Possible Solutions

* Check Transmission Fluid (Color and Contamination)
o Replace Transmission Fluid when necessary
* Check Transmission Mechanics

Special Notes

* Transmission Damage may be caused by Engine Problems, make sure there are no other/relevant Fault Codes stored in Engine Control Module.
* When found in 6-Speed Automatic Transmission (01J/Multitronic):
o Instructions on how to check the Transmission Fluid as well as Details on a special Test Kit can be found in TPI 2016661. TPI 2006088 may also be relevant.
o A conversion from 6 to 7 Clutch Plates may be possible. See TPI 2004856 for Details.

00532 - Supply Voltage B+
00532 - Supply Voltage B+: Signal too Low
Possible Causes

* Wiring/Connectors from/to Control Module faulty
* Power Supply (Battery/Generator) faulty

Possible Solutions

* Check/Repair Wiring/Connectors from/to Control Module
* Check Power Supply (Battery/Generator)

Special Notes

* When found in an individual control module, it's most likely a local source (e.g. wiring/connectors).
* When found in multiple control modules at the same time, it's most likely a common source (e.g. ground spot, battery, generator).
* Intermittent codes are often stored during low outside temperature when the battery capacity goes down and may be ignored.
* Common with 16946/P0562/001378 - System Voltage: Too Low stored in other control modules.

My* money would be on it needing a new TC.

(* I mean your money, obviously :( )

Mine went at 60k and had a history of a couple of leaks, including sump pan and output shaft. I would have said it was ok right up to the point it went, then it was slipping in 1, 2, 3, and it was always trying to get into 4th (using flappy mode). No lights though. It was virtually undriveable, I just managed to limp home with hazards flashing.

Try the oil change first. Mine was doing the same on up hill sections. Stopping on Anderson Drive at the Egg n Dart roundabout, going up hill and it would fail and go into limp mode. Did it there 3 times in a row. Volkcenter changed the oil and filter and it's be fine ever since. Hopefully you'll get away with that and not have to go for a new box just yet.

Here's hoping it's the oil.

If it's the TC, rip it out and send it to these guys... http://www.importperformancetrans.com/i ... ail&p=1895

Or get one of these... http://www.importperformancetrans.com/v ... auto.shtml
No matter where you go, there you are.
