Gearbox oil change, only 6.5 litres??
Gearbox oil change, only 6.5 litres??
Serviced my car over the past couple of days and did a gearbox oil change as per the instructions in the ZF manual and on audipages etc. When I drained the fluid I collected it all in a bucket and to my surprise it was just over 6 litres drained in total (this was over a 48hr period). I refilled the gearbox today with fresh fluid and it took the exact same amount as I had drained. I used VAGCOM to monitor the fluid temp up to 35C and followed the ZF refilling instructions to the letter. Those who have done this will know it is a difficult job, especially doing it single handed, but I am pretty confident that it will take no more than 6.5 litres. I had initially assumed that my oil level was low due to draining only 6 litres - I think I was expecting closer to 8. Can anyone tell me if this appears to be normal?

hey bud, i dont know how much the gearbox takes, but last year i had to reckon the gearbox because the guys at audi didnt put the correct amount of oil in and the clutches burnt out.
almost $4000

I'm surprisesd it took that much. Normally you can only get about 5 out. A lot stays in the TC. you just can't get it all out in one go without removing the whole box. Yuo could do it a couple of times to get 90% of the fluid...

I'm assuming also that the car was level, you did the level with the engine running and you ran through all the gears?

Yep, exactly as the ZF manual describes. The job was done on a car lift so the car was perfectly level. I am happy with the result, just was not sure about how much I should have expected to have seen drain.Shoppinit wrote:I'm assuming also that the car was level, you did the level with the engine running and you ran through all the gears?
