take the diesel.
save the precious miles on the rs for "pleasure" rather than just cruising.
also gives you something to look forward to at the end of the holiday......

Well, now theres the question.....

I recently did a 1700 mile trip to switzerland, and was going tio take the RS but couldn't, so ended up taking my 56 Pissrat.

Plus point
averaged 60mpg.

Bad points
uncomfortable as buggery
Slow- drearily slow.
Weather was <beep> and 2wd was woeful
Roads scream out for RSing- at one point I had 120 mph out of the pissrat, the road was so long and straight I rolled and smoked a fag!
Made me miserablr as i was wishing I had taken the RS.
The waitress in the hotel may have been more interested if she had heard my thrusting V8 milltek.....

Take the 6 and be done with it. Feckin Pissrats.....best thing to happen to mine was when i wrote it of on a deer.

Whats the point of the 6 if not continental cruising?!!

I'm puzzled! You buy a Six, and then when faced with 2500 miles of open road motoring, some of the best mountain roads in Europe, stunning scenery as a backdrop for photos, and the need to transport all the holiday gear one needs, you start thinking about taking the Passat???

What did you buy the car for if not for this kind of trip???? In the words (approximately) of the Boss "Baby, it was born to run!"

Make it a holiday to remember and take the RS.
It's designed for this type of trip

I've done Le Harve to Javea (Spain) in my old M3 a couple of times. It helped to make the holiday being on nice open roads and having enough power to cruise at speed. I'm taking the RS6 to Spain again this year, although only going from Bilbao to Javea this time (the wife got board, she should have driven some of the time) but I'm so looking forward to the trip. These ares are built to cross countries with ease.

The only point I would make is that the French arn't into there performance cars so be prepared for a small crowd when you stop anywhere near kids. They are harmless and will just want to take a look.

Use the vw for the winter, cr@ppy weather. That's what I plan to do, but I'm having trouble convincing the wife I need another car.

Even a 150 mile journey in my '6 in a couple of weeks' time is getting me excited! Heaven knows how I'd cope if I had the opportunity to drive across Europe in mine!
Lucky you ;)
