80K service + cambelt

Post by Mancmatt » Tue Mar 23, 2010 10:07 pm

Got price from Stoke Audi of £850 for belt + tensioner, £500 for service and add £290 for water pump + thermostat. Total - £1640 inc. VAT.

Not cheap, but I was surprised when a specialist quote only came in £54 cheaper??

Since a huge portion of the Audi quote is for very expensive labour (they want the motor for 2 days), would one not expect a significantly better price from an independent? I went through just the same with brake disks + pads and had the same result - wasted lots of time just to end up sticking it into the dealer - although I can understand this more as the labour:parts ratio is much lower.

I've been happy with Stoke Audi in the past but wondereded if anyone has made any worthwhile savings by shopping around more? Is it worth haggling perhaps :-)

Would also be keen to hear from anyone who has any horror stories (or positive feedback of course) regarding Audi Stoke.

Chrs.

Mmmm. Now I am confused. Wasn't gonna mention names but it was Unit 20 that quoted me £54 less?

Get a full break down on the parts used .... We replace all the parts that the belt moves over ... Water pump & stat..

On the service we replace, all filters , oil & plugs..

I don't want to get into a price war but i cant see how they can do a cambelt for £850 all the correct parts .. I see far too many that only have a telt ......

When I went audi (B.G- before Grizz) for a price for a cam belt service, to include all pulleys and tensioners, pump & stat, oils filters and spark plugs, they quoted £4.5k.
grizz did it for about £1500 3 years ago. So if he is now quoting £54.00 less than Audi, A) its £54 less & B) I know who I'd trust to do my cam belt.......
It's all Bollox.

the audi quote will very likely NOT be like for like, and so you are only kidding yourself

Go to Grizz and get it done by a specialist, its what your RS deserves

I recently had a service at Camberley Audi under the famed Rob C, the engine came out twice (or three times) and it became apparent the whom ever did the cambelt (maybe David K can tell us), made a dogs breakfast* out of it. Off the top of my head, this 'new' cambelt had only covered a couple thousand miles but it was now shot. The cambelt was so loose it could be pulled off by hand and the tensioner had seized. This all preceded me having to pay about £163 for new belt bits, thermy et al (the rest was being done as it was in for a 20k service). I didn't pay any labour, just parts, this was either due to it being under warranty or due to the previous Audi cambelt cockup.

Might be worth ensuring you get it done correctly, could cost you twice over.
No matter where you go, there you are.

The parts required to do a belt change cost £550.00 + vat. The book time to change the cam belt is 8.6 hr @ £50ph.
That does not include the pump or stat.

So The price of £950+vat is a little to cheap as the parts have gone up by £30..and I don't add any extra time for the pump or stat.

If a quote is cheap there is a reason.

Out of interest are there any 'symptoms' of a badly done cambelt other than it all goes bang?!.. Anything to watch out for?..

I'm not trying to start a price war but I guess I hoped that with a labour intensive job there may have been bigger savings to be had over the stealers.

I've no doubt in your ability Grizz to do the job properly, especially given the feedback on here. Just to clarify, the £ 850 tag was belt + tensioners. With pump and stat included would be £1140. Is there a long list of other parts that you guys would also replace?

My first job for sure is to clarify the full list of parts included in the dealer price for the cambelt + 80K service. I need to be sure that I am comparing like with like.

As for the 4.5K quote mentioned - they must av been taking the p**s. I guess you walked in with a Versace suit on or something :-)

I think it would be useful for future reference to publish a full breakdown of parts / part codes required for a full cambelt service with any other items that should be changed / serviced while their in there.. can we have a sticky please?..

The camshafts are out of time.. We see sooo many that have used tip ex to mark the pulleys and not the correct pin and bar.

If any one of the rollers were to collapse the belt would become slack and jump teeth. This would result in a dead engine.....

dealers did this on mine, it was discovered when the thermostat failed and the whole cambelt change had to be done again.

I had some work done by Audi, see the invoice. Sadly I didnt get teh thermostat done at the same time DOH!!! Make sure you do.

I don't want to seem like I'm sticking my oar in but this was a seriously good and competative quote, Im now due for the 80K service with the plugs etc and the same branch quoted me £750 + VAT! COME ON FFS!!
Just as much to do the cambelt/tensioners and pump according to them! As it happens and indy (one of two should should only use), they hit me with £515.00 PERFECTO.

Anyway all I would say is bear in mind Audi garages all have different prices where labour is concerned, some perhaps on the parts looking at what I was charged.
You can hound out a deal, if you need it, monkeys in suits perhaps at Audi, but it's all above board, guaranteed and my warranty likes that sort thang.
Good luck.
