After run pump system

Post by CliveH » Wed Feb 17, 2010 10:09 am

Should I be able to hear the after run pump running after a drive?

This should kick in at 130F (54C) engine temperature, so even a modest drive would get it up to that.

On the S4, you can hear it kick in almost as soon as you turn the engine off and can distinctly hear it running for 10mins or so.

I must admit, I've never heard mine, but then I always let the engine idle until the oil temperature comes down to 90° before turning off.

On my Golf it only comes on if the engine temp is significantly higher than normal when you turn off.

The electric continued coolant circulation pump -V51- is fitted underneath the intake manifold. When the engine is switched off, it prevents coolant in the turbochargers (which are still hot) from boiling.
The Motronic current supply relay -J271- is active for 15 minutes above an engine temperature of 60 C after the engine is switched off, and also powers the continued coolant circulation relay -J151- in addition to the engine control unit. The earth supply to the relay coil comes from terminal 61 of the alternator, which conducts earth only when the engine is stopped.
The object of this circuitry is that the continued coolant circulation relay -J151- operates the electric continued coolant circulation pump -V51- for at least 15 minutes only above an engine temperature of 60 C when the engine is stopped. When the engine is running circulation is handled by the mechanical coolant pump alone.
NoteThe continued coolant circulation pump runs very quietly. Avoid background noise whilst checking the pump. Call a second mechanic to check if necessary.
I'm going to be checking mine now. I thought they came on at a much higher temp.

Thanks for that Shoppinit. Where did you find that?

It certainly must run very quietly - I'll lift the bonnet next time.

I was surprised too. In the S4, the stock sensor kicks in around 100C I think, so there's a mod to fit a different sensor to activate it at a lower temperature.

Can't find a part number for it. Does anyone know what it is?

The pump. I know they are fragile. I need one for the golf anyway :)

Well, I had a good listen with the bonnet up, after a 30 minute drive home from work this evening. Not a peep.

Although by no means a spirited drive, the engine was certainly well above the trigger temperature specified :? Next job - check with Vagcom for faulty sensors or pump.

I'm pretty sure it won't throw a code if it dies. The manual specifies disconnecting it and testing the supply voltage. Need to get at it within 15 mins, though I presume.
