Gearbox on the way out??? :-O
Gearbox on the way out??? :-O
Over the past couple of weeks I've noticed that the gear changes can be a bit snatchy. Can't really describe it any other way.
Gearbox has had the TCU mapped. When in manual mode, allowing it to change up itself when braking and coming almost to a standstill and then accelerating again, the box seems to really 'snatch' the gears resulting in a fairly loud harsh clunk as it engages.
Also, the other day, also in manual mode, I was trundling along in traffic, prob in 3rd. had a chance to move into outside lane and put foot hard down. The revs went right up but felt like it wasnt pulling as hard as it should have. On a manual I would have said the clutch was slipping. Can this happen on an auto, excuse my ignorance?
Is this/these the sign of a failing box? TC?

RE: Gearbox on the way out??? :-O
Looks like tc on it's way out. Best get a gearbox service to see for debris. Try Doug or Grizz fella. Mine was serviced near 12 months ago and debris was found, the service'll prolong the tc a little but not indefinately. Once the tc's gone, I'll get doug to fix it' plus the precats, the pss9s and the H arbs!

it had a gearbox oil change towards the end of last year and said the old fluid was debris-free.
is it a big (read expensive) job to replace tc?

OH!!! *&%$(*£*&$*!!!!!
RE: Gearbox on the way out??? :-O
It sounds like TC or slipping clutches in the gearbox. Either is pricey as the engine needs to come out - ABout 20 hrs labour. A new TC is almost a thousand quid.

RE: Gearbox on the way out??? :-O
Hi JD you do not get much luck with your car mate, it does seem reading through all the threads hear that mapping car and gear box does have penalties to it, meaning extra stresses on everything, the RS6 is a expensive car to put right when things go wrong i would like the extra power that you gain from mapping but do not need the extra expense when things go pop, this is just my thoughts expect others to think otherwise though.

Pro's and cons of modding eh! You pay your money and take your chance. Even with my car being mapped i still drive my car like an old Granny 99% of the time (from what i hear Grizz is in the same boat), nursing it round roundabouts and from the lights. All in fear that too many 0-100's will eventually shred the box along with my heart. Will it prolong the life of the box? Time will tell. But at 89950 miles so far so good.

RE: Gearbox on the way out??? :-O
Thanks guys. Yep, only had car 6 months now and its had a fair few things put right. I must admit they havent been major ones (until now) but still more than I thought I would have to pay out within such a short time. Still a joy to drive though!!!
The slipping, 'snatching' happens when the car is warm/been running for over 20 mins so its not like the engine etc is cold or anything.
Most of the time I do drive quite sedately, as its my main car to/from work everyday - filling up once a week is plenty!! lol Also, its so torquey that its effortless to get up to whatever speed is required without thrashing it.
So, if the whole lot needs to come out, is it worth just replacing the TC or is it more viable to replace the whole thing. Can the gearbox be refurbished? Just wondering what my options are. I guess first thing is to get it physically checked out by someone who knows what they are doing rather than me second guessing.
Came into work this morning and it behaved itself - although it does 'feel' a little odd so there is def somethig not right. Maybe I'll just restrain my right foot a bit more and keep going until it gets so bad that it HAS to be done.

RE: Gearbox on the way out??? :-O
OK latest update:
Just driven about 17 miles, lots of gearchanges, 30, 40 ,50, 60 mph zones - no problems at all. Pull up behind a car for a few seconds. Went to pull off and needed a fair bit of accelerator to move off. Noticed all the gearbox lights were lit at the same time. Stayed like that until I switched off and on again.
Someone here at work suggested low transmission fluid??? Any correlation? How do I go about checking the level. I will do a VAGCOM session when I get home and see what faults have been logged.

RE: Gearbox on the way out??? :-O
I would get someone to change the fluid straight away. I know this costs money but they will see if there is any swarf etc in the fluid.
I have heard that some peoples box has gone pop just after this service but I would say it was going to anyway.
I can only speak from my experience. I was having similar issues and maybe the fluid was low but I had the service done (twice now infact) and it has never happened again and that was over a year ago.
Lets face it if the box has gone or about to go then a gearbox service will be the cheapest part!
