RS6 Prices

Post by Bieldside » Thu Dec 24, 2009 12:31 am

Boring subject - so apologies but coming back to consider an RS6 as prices have softened since summer time

2003-04 cars selling privately . £15000 seems going rate +/- £500-£1000 for age , history etc

That seems to be a price that will hold or is the view that prices will drop to sub £14K in summer 2010

Any thoughts - other than "just buy one"!!!

When I was searching for mine last aug / sept, I found that prices were more dependant on condition and warranty than age and mileage.
Yes, you can pick up an 04 reg for sub 14k, but it could be a potential money-pit without warranty, or cat D which will always be worth 3-4k less than a straight car.
If you take a good look through this forum, you'll see the costs of consumables and the other major weaknesses. This is a basic list, and it makes scary reading. If you find a car with warranty and most items done recently this list shows it can be worth thousands more than a car that needs all doing...
brakes £1400
suspension £1800
tyres £800
wheel refurb £250
cambelt £850
gearbox £5000
warranty £800 - £1200
other common faults - intercooler leaks, oil cooler & pipe leaks, cam cover leaks, turbo (less common), lambda sensors, MAF, DV, N75.

but having said that, they are great cars and overall very reliable.

so "just buy one.!!"......a good one..!!

If anything the price of RS6's has been going up since the arse fell out of the used car market due to the scrappage scheme. They will continue to do so in my opinion, especially pampered models kept by owners club members. Since last winter the value of an RS6 of good mileage and condition has gone up by about £2k on the private sale front. Obviously trade ins still are and always will be a rip off but thats the game we play.

The sale price of these cars also has substantial influence from the 'knowledgable private seller', especially within the internet forum members circle. We dont want to let our cars go too cheaply so as a unit we keep the prices up. What plays to our advantage is that a large number of UK RS6's are owned by folks on RS246.com / audisrs.com and in effect we can hold the key to the market.

prices have bottomed out....they wont go down much further, except the knackered uncared for 120k milers

my old car went up in trade price over the last month, and apparently is worth the same now as it was for the whole of 2008

if you want to wait, there will always be a bargain at some point, but if your waiting for them to naturally decline, they wont very much

6 years old now, basically the bottom of the curve for such limited production cars

also, £1k here of there on asking price will be blown out of the water if anything from the list needs doing, so dont concentrate to hard on asking price

"price is what you pay, value is what you get"

brakes £1400
suspension £1800
tyres £800
wheel refurb £250
cambelt £850
gearbox £5000
warranty £800 - £1200
other common faults - intercooler leaks, oil cooler & pipe leaks, cam cover leaks, turbo (less common), lambda sensors, MAF, DV, N75.

Also, compare the RS6 to the B5 RS4. These cars are now almost 10yrs old.
A nice, clean, cared for example with low miles will still cost over £20k...

Prices will hold for nice examples, and therefore also not so nice examples for many years to come, due to their limitied production run, and desirability. Supply and demand.

You'll always find cheap ones, but as mentioned they're likely to be dogs. You'll spend several thousand pounds getting it right, so why go that route??

David's car for example was actually quite 'cheap', not sure what it went for in the end, but it was a nice example (never saw it though), but due to it's high miles the price was low.

If you're not too concerned about miles then you can find a bargain out there. David's will I'm sure give the new owner a good year or so of trouble free motoring before any large bills come in, depending on the annual mileage it's subjected to (tyres, servicing etc).

Stop fannying around and get your cheque book out!!

I procrastinated for ages, should I shouldn't I? Knowing my luck it'll be a dog and I'll have to spend a fortune. The wife'll kill me... blah blah blah. After 6 months of ownership I'm loving it. Have spent alot on it, but only on modifications. Actual problems I've spent c£1500, which was for a cambelt service and reoplacement of MAF, DVs, EGT's etc... So actually it's been a bargain.

Once you've driven one and realised there's not much on the road that can keep up with you, you begin to realise why these cars are such sought after.

My impression is that they'd actually nudged up by a couple of £'000...

Currently £15k is about the mid rate for a 2003/04 +/- as you say, depending on mileage and spec. There is generally a premium of £500 to £1,000 for an avant, and the Pluses are obviously still commanding top money (£25k ish)

Your proposed price bracket is pure fantasy mate.

When I was looking for mine in 2008, the only car you could get for 15k was a 52 plate, 80k mile saloon with wood trim and no warranty, or perhaps a patchy history. If anything, prices have gone up since then.

A 'good' avant went in December 2008 for £16800 and was an 03 (IIRC) with 40k on the clock and no warranty. That sold as the buyer was desparate to sell. Within two weekss the (recently replaced DRC) blew up again and the torque converter failed - the latter wasn't covered under warranty.

Mine sold one year later, with 18k more on the clock for nearly £2k more than that. After I'd shaken on the deal I was offered two 'cash' offers of more than I sold it for but as a man of my word I stuck to the original deal (which is why I was so hacked off when the guy whinged about me selling off the keyrings!!)

There's a thread somewhere where people with their 'bargain' RS6s have been nearly bankrupted by needing new auto boxes or even new engines. Buy cheap, buy twice.

Would that have happened in the 6 then?

Apart from the age of the 6 DK, would you have gotten rid?
I'm starting to wonder more and more about ownership of a 6 mainly due to rear space for the nipper. Have a few trips planned for this year where I definitely want the '4 (Le Mans, The Ring etc), but can defo see myself getting a 6 later this year.

That black Avant advertised currently by techyreg is awesome. Everything done on it already. Shame about the brakes but the 'standard' brakes are hardly bad are they?!

the ONLY reason I swapped out the '6 for the '4 was because I knew I couldnt renew the warranty when it expired, and yes I could have kept it a few more months then sold it, but the key selling point was the warranty and so the longer left meant the easier sale.

Its personal choice and attitute to risk, but i wouldnt run an RS6 without a warranty

Apart from that, they are AMAZING cars, mine was still like brand new after 96k and was fast as fcuk

But thinking you can get a cheap one is simply a false economy.

mine was the exception to the rule...there are always exceptions, depends on buyers circumstances, i.e. I'd foolishly went and bought a RS 4, so priced mine to sell

yesterday i was re- viewing the youtube video for top gear testing the rs6 c5.
clarkson said "my god, this car is FAST. I had it up to 175 on our track and i swear it would do 200 given the space"
yes - they are truly awesome.
I particularly enjoy joining a 40mph queue of traffic from a t-junction using full throttle in first gear on the turn - there's mothing like it..!! just have to be careful not to rear-end the car in front......
