general question about cambelt change

Quick question:

On a cambelt change are the rollers changed as a matter of course (i.e part of the procedure) or are we just changing them as a preventative measure as with the thermostat, water pump etc.

in short, when audi to the scheduled cambelt change do they change the rollers too. i..e they need to be changed every 40,000 miles?

The tensioners should be changed. If one goes then your engine is just as dead as if the belt snapped. It's crazy not to change the thermostat and water pump while the front of the engine is off. There have been quite a few threads on here about the thermostats failing. Seems to be a fairly common occurence. The interval is now 40000 miles. Reduced from the originally anounced 60000.

+1,

Not all cambelt changes are the same! :D

Some Audi dealers leave tensioners and the aux belt off the list to make their quote appear cheaper.

OK. I know it makes sense to replace everything. I just wondered if having the cambelt service done for warranty purposes i.e. in accordance with the service schedule would include the tensioner and rollers etc or is it literally just the cambelt.

thats my exact question  :?:

to be honest, Audi are such a bunch of muppets, as long as they see cambelt change written on an invoice im sure they will take it as done, regardless of what was changed...

I guess what I'm really getting at is that if Audi are not bothered whether the rollers/tensioner etc are replaced (for warranty purposes) then do they actually need replacing at all!?!?! Has anyone ever had/heard of a roller/tensioner failing? The waterpump and thermostat I can understand as have those fail myself, albeit on a different car.
