Engine light. Secondary airbanks

Roughly once a year my engine light has come on with the error Secondary airbank left and right intermittent. (not got actual error code at the mo)

It is now coming on every month so something needs looking at as I can also feel she is not as quick as she should be.

Anyone had this? It's basically got too much air in the system for a split second which sets the light off. Last time garage thought it could be a Lamba sensor problem and to get saving!!

Are you talking about the Secondary air system?

if it's the secondary air injection, likely the vacuum hoses have split and are leaking - common problem, just had mine replaced for similar code at 45k mi.

Had this with mine. It was the vacuum hoses.

Thanks for the replies.

Anyone know of a rough cost if this is the problem. It won't be going to the Stealers.

If it's just the vacuum hoses then the answer is £11.68 - see http://www.rs246.com/index.php?name=PNp ... acuum+hose

Excellent!
Car booked in Thursday so fingers crossed it is just the hoses.

Ah - the hoses are £11.68 if you do it yourself, or £175 quoted by the dealer (it's about 90 mins work for them)

Fault Codes: 17819 P1411 002 - Bank 2, secondary air system throughput too low. Also; 17831 P1423 002 - Bank 1, Secondary Air system throughput too low

I have recently had the same problem, took it to Fife Seat who are supposed to be an authorised Audi service centre and they replaced a split hose free of charge.

One month later same problem, as I was on holiday took it to Highland Audi who checked system for leaks and valve function with no faults, they did tell me however that Fife Seat had used tye wraps which are not strong enough to hold the pressure, they should have used the metal crimps. Highland Audi however did not have any crimps so they cleared fault codes and told me to take it RS6 back to Fife Seat when I got home.

Light reapeared, as advised went back to Fife Seat who this time decided to change yet more hose and replace the valves, remember, these had been confirmed as working ok by Highland Audi.

One month later same fault back, Fife Seat decided to clean out EGR valves and change diapragms and advised that if this did not cure problem they would have to replace the EGR valves and take cylinder heads off, they assured me that this was the advice that Audi technical gave them?????

Three months later this time same fault codes, advised that cylinder heads would have to come off, told dealer to take a run and jump and went to Star performance in Dysart for a second opinion. With in 30 minutes they diagnosed the fault as the secondary air pump had no output, new pump fitted and I have had no further problems since.

Moral of the story is do not trust Fife Seat with your Audi, they are completely incompotent. I have other stories to tell about Fife Seat but I am in the process of involving Trading Standards so will tell all when I have the full story to tell

Well I am picking mine up today. It was one of the valves and they have replaced a few hoses. We shall see if the light stays off!

If it's like the B5 RS4's, it may be the pump on the way out, and starting to loose pressure

You can remove the filter from the top of the pump and clean it. Who knows, it may work.

Well I went to take the car back this morning and the engine light has gone out! I thought it had to be switched off!?

It was a bit of a pain to leave it today so will see if it comes back on during the week.
