I've had a brain wave.

As the speedometer is linked to the speed of the car, I've worked out that if I hammer a nail through the speedometer dial at the 70mph mark, then it would follow that the car will hit a "limit" as the needle gets to that point and cannot pass the nail, a bit like the engine hitting a limiter and going no further.

Why has this not been invented before?

Theoretically the nail could be "withdrawn" when you know it's safe to go further, i.e. a racetrack or airfield, and the nail pushed back in for your journey home!

It's a good idea. It should go in the book next to the "spike instead of airbag" and other things that we know would work but that no one would dare to try

How about if we made the roads out of rubber instead of tar-macadam construction made of bitumen and hardcore material?

Then if the roads were actually rubber, it would mean out cars would not need actual tyres, and the hard metal rim wheels would never need changing!

I saw a car made out of rubber once. THey crash tested it and all the body panels bounced back. In the slow mo, you can see all the paint shattering and exploding away from the car. Gonna try and find it.

This is a REALLY stupid assertion. If the roads were made of rubber, you idiot, the wheels would HAVE to be made out of CONCRETE, not steel as you foolishly suggested. Steel would provide very little traction and would be a totally unworkable solution.

And further, if this were the case, just exactly what do you propose to do when your favorite on ramp has a flat . . tire, er, road?

for a second there I found myself actually questioning whether the car is limited by the speedo needle !

I saw through that straight away - the needle is nowhere near stiff enough against the torque of the engine. So I have spent the morning engineering a much stiffer version in Kevlar and Titanium. Oh, and you'll need a crow bar, not a nail to fix it!
