Buying advice for RS4 vs RS6

Post by thespod » Sat Sep 26, 2009 12:12 pm

Bit of a newbie question.

I have around £17,000 in my sweaty little hands and would love a fast Audi sled. That money will get me a sweet RS4 on a 2000-2001 plate OR a 2003-2004 RS6 Avant. Both would come from a dealer, with a limited 6 month warranty.

The extra space and toys on the RS6 are useful but in no way essential.

I'm assuming the RS6 running costs will be higher (the insurance certainly is!). I don't do lots of miles so the fuel costs are unimportant.

Any advice on what to do ? Or should I just shut up and go and test drive them both and pick the one that gives me the biggest smile? :)

Yes, drive them both first and then come back and ask questions. If you don't drive them both you'll probably always wonder if you made the right choice.

It really depends what you are looking for.

Straigh line speed / Cornering
Agressive looks / Stealth

Size? V8 Grumble? Age? Mileage?

Worry about the running costs at the end. They will be considerable for both.

In the RS6 thread there won't be many of us that will say the RS4 as we have chosen the RS6 for a reason and vice versa in the RS4 threads.

Both are amazing.

What everyone else said plus............

Apart from the usual reasons (more power and toys) for choosing the RS6 over the RS4 what it came down to for Me was the extra space in the back for passengers.

I looked at an RS4 saloon and test drove it and it looked great had a nice motor and I liked the manual box but I have Two 13 - 15 Year old mutations that needed some legroom in the back which the 6 has loads of and the 4 has virtually none when the seats are in comfy positions for the Driver and front passenger.

Unless You and the other front passenger are garden gnomes !!

So if You need rear leg room for passengers it has to be the 6 or if You have lots of passengers that are amputees then the 4 will do you!

Cheers now, Rich.

In fact, I have posted a thread about thinking I`d bought the wrong car a few weeks ago!
I often sit looking at B5 RS4`s and thinking I would be enjoying the manual gearbox and sighter handling than the six but then I give my head a shake and think if I had bought one I`d now be wishing I had the extra space, brutish power, extra toys and evil noise from the RS6!!
I guess life is just full of fustrations.
My advice would be to look at what you want most out of the car, handling and the practicality of having a smaller car or total comfort and the practicality of space + lots of extra toys!
The RS4 does look nicer IMO

When I was looking at buying an RS4 or 6 etc (vs all the other cars on my short list) I ended up with a score card system that weighted elements such as space, practicality, cost, fuel consumption, power, blah blah, based on what I wanted in my next car. The '6 won and by no small margin, cost vs benefits was very high.

Every time I go out and drive her it feels fantastic. Every time I get out I think "what a brilliant car" with a grin on my face. Sad I know, but there you go.

Well, the space thing has done it for me. I need to ship around a 13 year old too and looking at the rear of an RS4, it's not going to be a comfortable place for a long journey.

Now that's sorted i've got to try and find one!

They seem to sell so fast that I'm going to find that a challenge... There were 3 for sale at www.fontain.co.uk on Fri and by this morning they are all sold :(

This one looks as good if not better than most! also you would be able to phone Grizz from off here (unit 20) to confirm the condition
