Well im currently looking for a new car and am weighing up either a S4 4.2 Avant for about £13000 or taking the plunge and buying what ive always wanted RS6 Avant Daytona grey for £18000.

I have been trying to find a buyers guide but so far have come up with nothing has anyone got a link?

I was planning on getting the car checked over before buying via the nearest Audi dealer i have called them who said would do a full inspection for £200 does anyone having any other recommendations of people who can do pre purchase inspection on the RS6.

Does anyone use there RS6 as a regular car or is it not suited as a daily driver?

My senisble head says get the S4 but i cant stop thinking about the RS think i need a reality check.

Do a search on this forum and you'll find loads of advice re potential purchase of a 6. You probably already know about the 2 main common faults being;

- the DRC (suspension) which will break in 99.9% of cases. Most owners then go for an after-market set up susp of H&Rs with Hotchkiss anti roll bars (I have this on my avant - it's fantastic)
- Gear boxes have a tendancy to go too. Some 6's for sale will have had a rebuild box and this is a good thing.

Personally I wouldn't (and don't) bother with Audi main dealers; I'll take mine to a specialist - someone like Unit 20 (up North, L/pool), MRC (Oxford way I think?) or Dialynx - my local specialists in Wilts.

RS6 v's S4 thoughts...I had this conversation witht the chap who owns Dilaynx - he says that the S4's are buller proof, not many have isues, not many come into him for repairs - but I still went out and bought a 6! My sensible head was left at home....you only live once.

PS - for 18 you've got every chance of geting a 6 with a warranty - sensible!

i've had both

RS 6 --- then S4 saloon, then S4 cab then back to an RS 6...that fact alone tells you how great the RS 6 is

BUT

they are expensive to run and need looking after - hence I would look for one with an Audi warranty as a 1st choice

if you can bag a warranty and can stomach costs of tyres / brakes / services, then you just cannot beat an RS 6

S4's were great - but you need a milltek on them as they're too quiet imo - and styling is a bit bland - depends what your after

Certainly bullet proof - except for bloody coil packs going every 5 mins !

Quick cars, yes, but fast ...? mmm without that turbo kick it just didnt do it for me

for £18k you should be looking to get one with an Audi warranty

Buy mine.... Just had a multi point check done by Audi and all is good, and I paid up for a warranty for THREE YEARS. Peace of mind...

I use mine every day and do about 18,000 miles a year in it! Expensive but worth every penny.

Ditto only about 20K miles per year - absolutely the ONLY way to travel!! Every journey ends with a grin!

Only difference no-o's mentioned is petrol 17mpg is my average, £70-£80 in petrol a week. There is no other way to travel

As has been said, £18k should be good enough for a pretty mint car with Audi warranty. Unlikely to get a sub-50k miler thesedays though. Beware that prices may actually be back on the rise - there seems to be quite a demand for 2nd hand cars thesedays...

i found S4 ave consumption to be 22mpg vs RS 6 which is 21 mpg

For 18 i'd even consider selling mine!

you'd only regret it, trust me I know

and the reason why....

there is NOTHING (imho) that can compare to it under £25k and based on the fact most are going for the £15k mark (give or take) it simply isnt worth spending anther £10k just to match what you've already got

and i dont know whats out there fore £25k that matches but im sorta thinking M5 V10 or RS 4 V8 - but im not even convinced they are worthy matches

I have driven loads of new cars recently - quite a few £35k plus and nothing feels the same as the RS6. Mine was a daily driver for almost 2 years now and I was putting 15k a year on her. I have recently got a brand new scirocco to do 10k miles and 5k on the RS6. It would make sense to get rid of the RS6 all together but I love it.

I challenge anyone to think of a car sub £25 that will do the same job plus the luxury and the kudos.

I know they might be more common elsewhere but I have only ever seen 1 over here and I love that.

they're not common at all....I've hardly seen any...can prob count on one hand the number iv seen in the last year, and I live in London !

I see WAY more RS 4's (B7's)

Last summer I was offered a M5 touring for 15k plus my RS6.

Dont get me wrong it was blisteringly quick, but when thwe sales man drove mine he had to admit, it was just aout the quickest thing he had ever driven, and as for getting there, well, in a league of its own.

The B5rs4/s4's are less money and quicker when tweeked, but then you lose space and go older.

P.S. I was joking about selling mine....... (£25k and its yours.... Mooch single handedly returns the RS6 market to bouyancy!!)
