Gearbox queries - what ZF type no and torque converter

Post by paul_23 » Tue Aug 04, 2009 6:48 pm

Can anyone confirm the ZF type number of our C5 RS6 as I have found some sources that say it is a zf5HP19fla and others say it is a ZF5HP24A.

Do all C5 RS6 have the same gearbox or do USA models have different spec?

I need this as I plan to order an upgraded torque converter as mine is faulty. If the new TC can take more torque (I will spec it to take more than 550 lbs ft) so does the transmission ECU need to be changed to match it? Has anyone done this before?

Cheers
Paul

Its the ZF5HP24A in the RS6.. I found this;

Automatic gearbox 01L.6
Gearbox Code letters GAG
Manufactured from 04.02
Torque converter Code letters N45
Allocation Model Audi A6 1998 â–º
Engine 4.2 ltr. 5VT - 331 kW
Ratios 1st gear 3.571
2nd gear 2.200
3rd gear 1.505
4th gear 1.000
5th gear 0.804
Reverse gear 4.095
Front axle Spur gear drive 34:29 1.172
Bevel gear drive 30:11 2.727
Ratio 3.197
Rear axle Spur gear drive 31:40 0.775
Bevel gear drive 37:9 4.111
Ratio 3.186

I would speak to ZF authorised dealer and see what they say about the TC and ECU..

It's based on a ZF5HP24A but it's been modified. From the RS6 training manual:

The following modifications have been
made to the previous transmission:
• Reinforced transfer gear and
transmission housings
• Increased clutch pressure
• Brake “Dâ€

Thanks.
I will keep the forum posted on the job as I plan to upgrade the converter and maybe the gearbox components using parts from USA like level 10 or Import Performance http://www.importperformancetrans.com/v ... shtml#main. I am trying to persuade my warranty company to stomach the cost as it is much less than a new OEM converter and the dealer doing it here.....

What about the electronics / ECU / TCU and the non-OEM converter?

Would love to see a solution to this problem. A stronger box would be great!

In most cases I read about, a torque converter replacement was followed shortly after by a complete transmission replacement. Seems like whatever causes the TC to fail kills the box, too.

Wish you luck Paul. Perhaps this can be to failing gearboxes like coilovers are to DRC ....

By the way, I read Evo's original 2002 review of the RS6 - http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evocarr ... i_rs6.html (fifth paragraph) that says the gearbox is from the A8 W12

I know Grizz has told me there is a specialist local to him that can rebuild transmissions, I wonder if they could rebuild to a better spec.
Maybe he'll be along in a minute...

To do the converter means the engine and tranny have to come out so I could upgrade the internals but this will mean a full rebuild at more cost.....

I spoke to Import Performance and they said the best upgrade and the easiest is to upgrade the valve body and put a cooler kit on our trannies - both can be fitted with the tranny in the car as the valve body is accessible. The valve body makes more positive shifts (so does not wear the clutches) and can hold gears at higher torque. The cooler prolongs the life as it runs cooler.... He told me the gearbox internals are generally fairly strong so if none of my gears are slipping then leave it in and just do the converter and the valve body. Trouble is, I need to send them mine and they upgrade them then send back so the postage rates will be high.....

Cheers

The Audi Part Number is A01L300043 EX - May be irrelevant I know.

thanks

I spotted this too and have been in contact with them - fairly helpful but same problem of them knowing exactly which converter is in our cars so he is searching the market for a core to rebuild otherwise I will have to take mine out, send to USA, get it back and refit it - so the car would be off the road for 2 weeks.

Cheers
Paul

FON (Fcuk off n00b).
Rule 1.

You're posting in a zombie thread AND this is the C5 section NOT the C6 section.

IIRC there are 1000+Nm C6 RS cars kicking about with unmodified gearbox internals. Now sort yourself out and take from this what you will.
No matter where you go, there you are.
