Replaced my RNS-D system with a Kenwood 5240BT system

Post by Joules » Thu Apr 16, 2009 5:03 pm

Just replaced my RNS-D system with a Kenwood 5240BT system.

Main reasons were:

Lack of Bluetooth
No DVD playback
Small screen
Poor IPOD integration
No USB integration

Initial comments on the new system:

Superb Bluetooth and phone prep with excellent voice dialling
Outstanding sound via IPOD for both Music and Movies
Touch screen is easy to use

Here are a few pics:

Looks superb mate ! Nice and flush.
Glad someones done something other than the usual RNSE upgrades !
What adaptor plate did you use? Autoleads?
And did you consider the Pioneer units?

Will the standard TV tuner work with that head unit?

I did think of going the RNS-E route but decided against it. To be honest they fitted the wrong adaptor plate i.e. not rubberised. They are ordering a new one but considering the wear aspect I might stay as is because it blends anyway.

You can get the full adepter kit, fascia, leads etc inc Bose from http://www.dynamicsounds.co.uk/ but there are lots of places

I did consider the Pioneer but heard good reviews about the Kenwood and Garmin (Maps) although looking a little more basic are a solid sat nav supplier.

No I did ask, but the STD on my car is analogue so no good shortly and a stack of Movies played via the IPOD in mp4 format is my preferred choice

I'm very impressed with that. Can you give a rough idea of costs? Parts, installation etc?

Cheers,

Greg

Does it use the standard GPS antenna? Where do you connect the ipod and is it easy to manipulate the controls? Does it have an in-built microphone for hands free phone use?

Looks like a solution to several of my problems, CD player only recognises two or three discs, not the same ones each time, the sat nav disc wasn't the right one when I bought it, £200 for a disc (for a system that reads as average on this forum) and no phone or wiring in the car currently. FM ipod connection with cigar lead is a pain.

Clean installation and less than a grand?

Martin

Uses a separate antenna under the dash but gives a full 5Bar strength everywhere I have used it.

I put the IPOD in the small tray above your right leg but no real need to have it there, everything is on screen (touch). I also routed the USB cable via the service slot under the SWheel for uploading info to the HDD.
Mic is place above the RV mirror

Is it set so that it plays when moving?

Does it work from a sat nav disc and does this go in the same slot as the dvd?

i think you're going to be busy with this post mate, lol

No the Nav is in-built i.e. HDD I believe could be Solid State?. So the slot is for DVD,CD etc

It can be set to play whilst moving by grounding one of the leads.

There is a cool reversing camera options too!! which autoselects when you select reverse.

Slightly Off topic, On your second photo, what are the ? two buttons on the lefthand side of your steering column? is it electric steering column adjustment?

Thanks for posting these. My hunt for an RNS-E is driving me mad and for the same money, it looks like a better spec.

I've never owned a kenwood - is the sound quality, not necessarily volume, on a par with the RNS-D ?

Looks really good and with ISO connections, you can transfer easily enough to another car with a double-din stereo without much hassle.

I think I'm talking myself into this
