Them's the Brakes!

Well Hello fellow RS6 comrades!

I haven't had a good natter for a while, for which I apologise, I'm going to finish off my findings on my tyre / tracking issues from 12 months ago on another section, but the times coming up for me to get into replacing my brakes and I'd like to call on you wise bloggers out there to put me straight on any of your findings and expert advice.

I have a completely standard RS6 and each time I've been to my Audi dealer for a service, I comment on the very 'AVERAGE' braking performance I feel I have on my car. The RS6 is an 04 model with 46,000 miles on her. She's had the same dealers history from new on all servicing issues and it's had all the relevant disc & pad inspections as well as a fresh fluid change. The car doesn't pull to the left or right and I've been assured that everything is OK.

However, I'm sure that it's not me being paranoid by saying that the brakes don't have the 'BITE' that I would expect to have on a car of this size / performance.

Everytime I touch or hit the brakes, they do work, but they don't scrub off speed how I want them too. I mean, I'd like to be afraid of touching the pedal, or at least know that if I stand on the pedal with both feet, I risk being thrown through the windscreen!!

So why is it that I reckon my brake pads are made of Pine wood, rather than sintered materials? I've had to learn how to drive this car, as it does reward if driven in a specific way, but if I'm approaching roundabouts at 3 figure speeds, the braking really has to be done at an early stage, as there are times when I've literally thought of opening my door and using the heel of my shoe to help it slow down.

My question to the wise amongst you is, can you relate to this and what have you done to cure it?

For example, are the RS6+ drilled discs I have are man enough for the job and I just need a set of aftermarket pads such as EBC Yellowstuff, or do I need to go the whole hog and buy another brand with matched pads to get the response and feel I want?

I welcome all comments and would be interested to know what you all have done in terms of testing different pads/disc combinations to get that real race car feeling and confidence with the brakes.

Kindest Regards,
Chris Webb. :?:

Don't forget the cooling ducts Alex.... those brakes get d4mn hot when really pushed. You would want DS2500 or similar for track use IIRC but would lose the wear sensor.

So, Big brake disc upgrade, phaeton ducts + DS2500 would be my choice. Just my 2p.

Hi guys, jeez, that forum trail quickly went off onto a personal level didn't it? :D What the heck though, if you can't have a larf, then it ain't worth it is it.

Dear 'Moocher of the Cornish variety' and 'Mr. Gardiner', I have been contacted by the 'Jedi Brake Master' - "Mr. Grizz" to chat to him about options to move onto, regarding more powerful anchors. Obviously this is way to go, so your positive comments have confirmed what I need to know, so thanks for your time in responding.

If you plan to go to the Audi owners track day event at Castle Combe, it would be nice to meet you both breifly and say hello over a cuppa tea.

Have a good weekend guys.

Regards,
CW

Grizz will speak to you re brakes when I see you ;-)

I might actually make it to ADI this year... always good to meet new peeps!

I did wonder about fitting a boat anchor in the boot with a quick release handle - thought it might be a cheaper option and effective. 8) A guess that's another reason to have an Avant!

 LOL.. hehe..

I haven't even done the fronts yet, but each time I see something new available, I keep thinking ah, I'll get it all done at the same time, but I end up not getting anything done because of the overall cost.

My current wishlist is now so long, I'll need to sell alot more than body parts to fund them.. I can feel a loan coming on..

We're talking brakes (f+r)
Cambelt change
Service
4 new tyres
trip to wheels-in-motion

Just for starters...

I now see why you are always making trips to get stuff done one at a time. It's alot easier!
