Track days

Post by Mancmatt » Tue Dec 02, 2008 3:32 am

Hi Guys,

Looking for some advice on suitable venues for track days etc. Bought my RS6 as a toy really and want to test it out properly! Looked on web and found some possibilities but I wondered if any of you guys frequented a particular place?? Also, reading other forums it seems like OEM brakes can cause issues - anyone there got advice on brakes? Do standard ones work on the track or should I be looking to upgrade before I take the plunge?

def upgrade on the brakes. Also, try to lose as much weight in the car.

Get a car better suited to trackwork, or expect to destroy discs pads and a set of tyres...

i purchased my rs6 for some track use, but after owning the car i decided to never take it on a track. The 6 is to heavy and will destroy tyres, discs, pads among other things in no time. Unless you have very deep pockets and you strip the rs6 bare ( which would be a real shame) i dont think it would make a very good track car compared to other cars out there. Buy a skyline! My skyline has been timed at 7 minutes around the nur ring on road tyres with full trim inside. You wont get better for your money.

I didn't wanna be a spoil-sport when this message was posted initially so refrained from adding my two penneth.

My comment was going to be that the RS6 wouldn't be the best option for the track. It is just too big of a barge. Don't get me wrong, it is extremely quick in a straight line, loads of grip and not bad on bends, but I just wouldn't trust myself pushing it on a track.

I also agree with Matty in that in terms of consumables on the track, unless you have deep pockets, I would avoid doing so. Why ruin such a brilliant car by thrashing it? Mine is a daily drive and I can't fault it, but as a "toy," it just doesn't cut the mustard.

I too took the 6 to the nur. Good thing I was half expecting a half decent performance from her. The engine is too far forward of the front axle, there crap on track bends ( much the case of very slow in fast out!!). Never will she see a track again much to my dismay. I'll keep her on the straight and traffic light gran prix.

Best off getting something else for track use. The idea I pointed out in doing mega upgrade on brakes and losing weight is do-able, but a waste of a perfectly great car.

I have to agree. When I bought my RS6 I had plans to track her, but after a few month driving her on normal roads (even with KW V3 coilovers, Hotchkiss ARB's, and monster MOVIT brakes) she does not inspire me to take her to the track. I love the car to bits, it's an awesome luxury saloon car and really satisfying to drive, but it does not give the feel I would like from a track car. Due to the weight up front the cornering ability is not great in my opinion, nor is the gearbox suited to track work and unless you did a full MTM 'club-sport' conversion (google this to find out what it is) for mega bucks these 2 issues will always let you down. I have tracked classic Saab 900's and Subaru Legacy turbos in the past, both amazing fun and even though not as fast as an RS6 (in a straight line) due to thier lighter weight, tighter handling and turn-in and better balance they always made me want to push them further.
My RS6 will remain a seriously quick luxury road car - simple as that :-)

Track

Its definitely true that the RS6 isn't a car that you'd choose for track work. But ignoring this, its not nearly as bad as it could be on track (especially in the wet where the chassis allows a bit more play). I entered mine in an Autocar "how fast" day years ago and ended up at the front end of the field (against a pretty varied collection of cars).
The only modifications that I did was to use Castrol SRF fluid and Pagid RS15 pads. Pirellis held up well on track and would have done a good few days, Continentals didn't like the track at all.

On the topic of toys, I thought I would introduce you to my new toy.

Bought it in September (1,700 miles on the clock) a few days before finding out that my girlfriend and I are expecting our first baby!!! Oooh.

It's under wraps in the garage at the moment. These pics were taken when I bought it and since then I have been able to do a few things, including getting rid of those ridiculous Falken decals and adding some carbon-fibre arch and sill protectors (amongst other bits!)

I have a few plans for it next year but all plans are on hold now until jack Frost goes away.

Hope you like it!!!

I am about to take delivery of my RS6 next week and whilst the RS6 would not appear to be an ideal track car, having recently been to the Nurburgring and watching one being driven round there, it is still a mighty quick machine and the only thing that could stay with it was a RUF Porsche with 650 bhp.

It would appear to depend upon the track and whilst a small tight twisty track would not be ideal, surely a long fast sweeping track like Goodwood, Thruxton, Castle Combe, Le Mans or the Nurburgring would suit it ?

Certainly I will be taking my RS6 to Goodwood, the Nurburgring or Le Mans in the next year just to give it a try, albeit my track car is a Caterham Superlight R and I would not expect an RS6 to keep up with this around the twisty bits albeit would outrun it on the straight simply as the Caterham tops out at 140 mph.

It really depends on whether it is just for the occasional fun or serious track abuse. The 6 was a great blast on the track but the stock brakes aren't up to repeated heavy braking and she is no lightweight in the corners - 5 laps of full on at Mallory Park needed a serious cool down. But like I said I really enjoyed it. If you want to go even faster round the corners you need to go much lighter. I would love to get a Caterham R500 or an Atom for track use though - there's plenty of choice out there.
