Where can I get a 160F thermostat?

Post by snoopra » Thu Oct 23, 2008 12:43 am

I've been doing alot of searching, but I can't locate a 160F thermostat for the BCY RS 6 engine. Anyone?

normal is 89-92c i believe. 160 is very "cold" (71c). what purpose do you want to achieve? during my normal morning run, the car spends less than 4 minutes <90c.

I live in the tropics, always hot. Oil temp sits at 220-240F. Lowering the coolant temp should bring the oil temp down to about 200-220F, well above the 176F operating temp.

but you won't be lowering the coolant temp, only shortening the time to open the thermostat and allow coolant flow to the radiator for cooling. as i said normal operaitng temps is in the 90-99c range, well above the thermo open value.

does anyone know whether it is possible to use a "dummy" thermostat" and what the negative implications are? mine has just gone and i have been told this is an option. living in dubai, it might not be a bad thing. i am sure you are aware that it gets quite warm here from time to time.

the purpose of the thermostat is primarily to aid warmup time. removing it would reduce warmup time (with implications on engine wear), with a possible benefit in increasing coolant flow (less restriction). however a quick perusal of the rs6 cooling system reveals a number of quite restrictive parts so i wouldn't expect any tangible benefit. audi's (much better) solution was to increase cooling surface with the additional radiators in the + pack.
