RS6 or S4?

Post by MICALEE » Wed Sep 24, 2008 6:15 pm

Following from a previous thread, I have noted that a 2003 Plate RS6 is as near as damn it the same price as an S4 B6. MPG is only 1mpg lower and insurance is cheaper somehow?

What would be the prefered choice as i cant decide between the two.

I watched a review on youtube and the ride comfort was critised, so is it really that hard?

Is 19mpg accurate compared to 20mpg from the S4? What are the pro's and cons between the two? Any advice would be appreciated

If you drive the car with your foot tot the floor and enjoy speed get the rs6 but get the suspension replaced as stock suspension is poor. If you don't drive foot to the floor or enjoy driving flat out then it is what feels the nicest to you.

RS6 does decent mpg if driven sensibly - 25-29mpg - but is poor if you drive hard.

I currently have an 08 S3 and the fastest car I have had is an import 280bhp Impreza. Both cars I presume would wipe the floor but being new to these models and really keen to buy one or the other, with speed aside, what would be the selling point for the RS6 over an S4? or vice versa? I think the looks go for the RS and of course its bigger. Assuming everyone in this forum has an RS, a biased approach is evident, but I wish to gain as much info from those who have actually owned these is my mission.

Top of the range, Turbo's, Prob/maybe better spec, more space etc.. Wouldn't even be a contest if I were choosing again. RS is a beast

The scoob is probably quicker than the s4, but then a lot of peeps here have b5 s4's or earlier that will kill my tweeked rs6. As doug says depends what you really want, you will be limted to what you can do with a b6 s4 NAv8 i think, as opposed to the v8 bi turbo or v6 biturbo b5's which is really only limited by how deep your pockets are!
I have seen gps registerd 187 on my rs6 and it would have gone more if there was more runway, that extra cost me about £1000. To get that out of a b6 you would be talking SC's, or turbo's or re engining i suspect, but there are people on here better qualified than me to explain that or even tell me I am wrong (which is very likley).
As for MPG best I have ever done is 310miles on 82litres, although there were a few "squirts" and a bit of country lane driving, but I would not doubt the high 20's are possible.
Go test drive a B6 S4, then speak nicely to someone near you with a RS6 or B5 S4 etc and see for yourself, I know which you will go for i feel.....

Getting some good advice here. The shear power is not my main factor. A car with equal performance yo my S3 would be enough, so even the slightly less powerful S4 B6 (compared to the RS6 C5) would be sufficient. I would have no plans to tune it, I think the fuel costs would be high enough as they are. I concidered the RS4 and other V6 models, but the sound of the V8 sold it to me.

So, It has to be a v8, hense the choice between the S4 B6 and the RS6 C5. The S6 (2003 plate) is much slower than both of these, but without contradicting my point on performance, I just prefer the look of my two choices.

I would prefer comfort to a rock hard ride also. Its a hard choice and without driving them, the research goes on.

you will have a better ride in the s4 then the rs. the rs will hold it's value better, and is faster and has significantly more space. after all is said and done, it is an rs. enough said?

No way was I going to buy an RS6. Then I drove one. Nuff said. You can't explain the feeling of the torque / acceleration. As a passenger it is even more so, must people swear the first time. The spec is 2nd to none and I drive it every single day and find it really compy, the seats are fantastic. Best I have got is 350 miles on a tank and always get 300 (about 22mpg average). Worst over a whole tank was 17.8mpg and that was the first tank!!

Yeah, you really need to go and drive them both. The RS6 is miles faster than the S4 and it doesn't feel that big a car to drive. RS6 is a cult car! S4, RS4 baby brother...

I owned an S3 a few years back and loved it. I also looked at purchasing a B6 S4, but the deal fell through. Then I saw a RS6 Avant took it a test drive and the rest is history. Honestly these cars are awsome but be aware when things do go wrong have the credit card handy, as the repair bills have RS stamped on them to. I imagine the S4 will not be cheap to own either and in no way am I trying to steer you clear I am only giving you some honest advice on these cars.

The ride is slightly noisy, but no comfort is lost, on average 19mpg is achievable which is urban, about £80 fills a tank, insurance is reasonable. You should find one easilly on the net at present, but look out for any selling as they know the DRC is in need of replacing.

Happy hunting

basically you don't buy either of these cars for economy - and if that is your primary concern, go elsewhere. my view is that the price of petrol just make you appreciate driving these cars more....
