Annoying rattle + gearbox issue

My saloon has developed a very irritating rattle behind the dash, which sounds like it is emanating from the demisting airvent.
Has anyone else had this?
I was also wondering if this was something I could get at myself and whether or not I would need to remove the whole dash.

BTW, I had the gearbox fault repaired under warranty. It seems to me that this is quite a big problem. Has anyone else had a second one go or are the new ones an improved version?

i have the rattle. it comes about once a month for about an hour then goes. I have most of my dash out at the moment and it really is not a nice job or for somebody without very good skills of stripping things down and rebuilding skills.
