LPG

Post by swilkins » Mon Feb 04, 2008 9:13 pm

Hi All,
just wondering if anyone has converted their RS6 to LPG? I'm having mine done next week. The tank goes in the boot, the battery comes out and is replaced by a smaller racing item which hopefully will go where the cd changer (bust!) and TV unit goes in the side of the boot. WOuld love to hear your comments - good idea / bad idea / tried it etc? Chap doing it has an S8 done and its excellent!!

I am unsure of what LPG is.

How much is it? Will your performance and driving experience eg. noise etc. be affected?

LPG = Liquid Petroleum Gas I believe (!) - its sold on about 1/5 of all forecourts in the UK, and is about 50-55p a litre so you get 60 litres of fuel for abt £30, the cars performance is not noticeably affected and the fuel is cleaner than petrol - no carbon deposits in the oil I believe. It means that I can do 300 miles for half the cost currently - £80!!

I am aware of the fuel saving possibilities and although this is an attraction (damn, the RS6 is thirsty) I would be worried about losing the performance etc. As long as your car will be as quick with LPG then I say good on you. Please keep us informed.

You won't be able to take your car on the eurotunnel with LPG.

I had LPG on my 4.2 Range Rover. It takes twice as long to fill up the tanks as they are pressurised. I used to pay 28p less than 2 years ago !
It will knock 25 - 30 percent off performance but I am sure kits have got better than a couple of years ago.

i know some one who had it fitted. The ecu got confused and stopped the spark to the pistons. This then filled the inlet and intercooler with gas which then ignited and then the intercooler blew the end tanks off and flew through the front bumper. The air filter was also set on fire and then caused even more damage! Whoops!
Anyway, i dont think i would install on such a high performance car myself that asks for 97+ ron fuel as standard.

Eurotunnel's website says:
"We regret that LPG and dual powered vehicles cannot be transported by Eurotunnel for safety reasons. "

If it leaked, there would be an explosion risk in a confined space. (or risk of gassing everyone in the same compartment! )

Phil Price 2 times World Rally Champion uses LPG in his training cars and also his Race car. He runs a Motec ECU that also injects petrol, uses it like a turbo charger.
Been in it and was very quick. Doubt there is too much in it performance wise.

i believe that lpg is 100ron - many cars make do without a modified ecu map, but i'd want to have this option with a hi-po car. the other big issue is range - just not anywhere as good as with petrol. also you lose a fair amount of usable space in the vehicle.

I'm in the proses of buying a motec m800 for the rs6. Best ecu i have ever come across and i think we will get great results from the rs with it! Not sure how they running the gas and the petrol at the same time on the rally car tho. Unless they are using a high oxygen content fuel or something and the gas is acting more like a nitrous system maybe?
