Lumpy in the mornings
Lumpy in the mornings
Hi,
Every so often when I start the car in the morning it does not seem to idle properly and is really lumpy if that makes sense! I just have to rev it a bit and then it seems to settle down and everything is ok. Does anyone else get this and is there anything to worry about?
Also every now and then when I have the steering on almost full lock either way and pull off slowly I hear a funny almost grinding / rubbing noise from near the front. It’s hard to recreate and so hard to diagnose, any ideas?
Cheers
Liam

Hi Liam,
Mine doesnt so much feel 'lumpy' but I do get noisy tappets often at start up and then this settles down after a few seconds, the garage told me that it is just the design of the hydraulic tappets and is nothing to worry about, just them priming with oil??!!
I also have to put full lock on to get out of my drive and get the same grinding noise?? I am going to ask the dealer about this but it could be the tyres scraping as I recall another thread about this?? I try not to put full lock on now, but its difficult. If I get any useful info from the garage I will let you know.
This doesn't really help you but - just worth contributing??!
Cheers,
Lig.

Doesn't sound like tyres but suppose it could be, will be interesting to see what the Garage tells you Lig.
Grizz, It has just had its 40K service but am not sure if new spark plugs were in that, will try and have a look in service book to see if it mentions it.

Said I'd get back when I knew more about the grinding sound - My RS has gone in again with the same noise. It happens when the car is first started and at low speeds (~20mph) when I turn the steering wheel.
Audi are looking at it at the mo and initial diagnosis suggests a problem with the power steering pump. They are changing seals because I was losing fluid and then they'll see if the system is still playing up. I took an Audi warranty out so all covered, I hope,
Reading some of the other post I'm seriously thinking about going to Camberley Audi, Walton are either not that interested in an 'old car' (53 plate) or are fed up of people like me getting the money's worth out of their warranty!

Liam,
I'd suggest the centre diff is making a noise as well, when I first had the car it took me a while to find out what it was.
Might be an idea to try recreating it a littel more in deserted car parks or using full lock more often intentionally at junctions.
