hi everyone

just in the process of purcahsing my 1st rs6 03 plate with 55k full audi service

when i have started the car from cold it sounds like a plane has just started its engines

after a couple of mins this noise goes away

is this normal or is there a problem

any help on the matter would be great also is there anythng else i should be looking out for which could be a problem

No sounds normal to me... there's lots of jet wizardry under the bonnet when starting, whilst running and then after you've turned off.

Yep, that is normal, fans pumps, and the warp engine kicking in

I reckon that if you imagine the environment in which it operates, it needs to be a big bugger in the RS6 to overcome the heat from the beasts heart!

speaking of fans and noise etc., are the turbo's in the rs6 self-lubricating? in other words, do you need to keep the car at idle for a couple of minutes before shutting down or can you kill it straight away (assuming normal / average driving) and how long should one allow it to cool down after a blast?

I always allow a cool-down time, but there is a secondary cooling circuit which keeps a pump working after switch-off.

I used to have a pump whirring away after switch off, but since I recently sent it in to get the doors to self lock whilst driving it seems to have disappeared. I put this down to me not driving hard enough on the short trip to work and back as its only about 5 miles I thought perhaps there was a temperature switch or something. But I was away for the weekend in the beast and noticed it still wasn't whirring after a longer trip, does anyone know if this after switch off cooling circuit is controlled/switched by the VAG codes or am I looking at something more expensive? It just seems a bit of a coincidence.

the "jet noise" is the 600watt (big) fan on primary speed for the air/con - turn that off and it will only start up when the engine temperature requires it.

the turbos have a water cooling circuit (in addition to the oil circuit) and an "after-run" pump which keeps the coolant circulating after switch off. you should *always* hear this going after switch off - a gentle wiring sound for a couple of minutes. it is triggered by engine temp >60c which will occur on even a 2 minute idle - which makes it easy to check.
