I drove an S4 cab auto just after I put a deposit on my RS6. The 6 speeder was similar except that it kicked down to 5th with the slightest pressure on the accelerator at dual carriageway speeds which drove me nuts.

As to spot one with DRC issues - if you can see an RS6 and it still has DRC then you spotted one. Almost anyway.

Hi Dazzpowder  and welcome to the forum!

 as he says. If the car is cold and the DRC is low on pressure due to leaking shocks you will get metal clanks from the rear of the car (like the tools are loose in the boot!). More easy to hear in an Avant. If the car is warm the pressure increases therefore wont be so noticable. Get a warranty and make sure that hydraulic suspension is covered  , or budget £1600 to replace with PSS9s or similar ;-).

RS6 auto is very smooth!

Gonna sound thick here but what is DRC? What does it stand for and how do I tell if my motor has it? Mine, so far (touch wood) is great!

CoilOvers

Post by dazzpowder » Fri Sep 21, 2007 9:40 am

Quick question - would you not lose out by fitting coil overs? I though the whole point of the DRC was to actively adjust ride comfort and car roll. also wouldn't coil overs make the ride too harsh?...ok two questions

Thanks

All RS6s have it (Disclaimer - unless someone's already ripped it out!)

It stands for Dynamic Ride Control. "A simple, pure mechanical damping system invented by Yamaha. Basically, DRC connects the hydraulic of front right damper to rear left damper together, the same goes for front left damper and rear right damper. When the car is braking into corner, deceleration and cornering force lead to front outside suspension compress and rear inside suspension expand, thus damping fluid flows between them and damping force is increased. This counters nose dive and tail rise." Body roll etc, it works when it's working, but roughly 75% of owners questioned here have had to have corrective work on the system - and it doesn't come cheap.

Cheers Grant. So I am presuming I'd know if I had such issues then?

was to actively adjust ride comfort
nope. Just to keep the car more level due to nose weight etc. We have a number of '6s fitted with PSS9s on this forum and they have nothing but praise to say about them. Personally I think the DRC is sh1t, not sure about 2nd generation (and 3rd in the new RS6). We are already starting to see DRC probs on some of the RS4 B7s. For me the problems are clanks, vibrations and squirmy ride. I suppose if you have a working DRC system then there is no point in replacing it.

I've had US style "street racing" suspension fitted to one of my previous cars and you are right that it is very hard but the cornering was absolutely superb (1700kg car), but the PSS9 has 9 damping adjustment levels to suit your taste, along with an adjustable ride height.

If when the car is cold you have no clanks/vibrations, and it feels tight and level on fast corners then you should be fine. But unfortunately the only way to check if the shocks are leaking is to get under the car after a hard drive on a dry day!

Please don't forget that this is just my opinion of MY car. ;-) DRC DOES work, and feels brilliant from what I can remember. It's a great concept but the implementation seems to lack that certain reliability factor that most of us would expect from a £65k car. I would rather take a slight hit in the cornering performance (if that really is the case) and have a system that is reliable, and the ride quality can't be worse than it is at the moment for me. If you have a decent warranty then the only thing you have to worry about is how often it ends up getting fixed - if that gets too much for you then go for the PSS9s or similar.

Have a look at Rich C's installation notes and comments:

I agree with the above. Mine has a slight patter from the front when it's been parked up for a while (I don't use it every day unfortunately) and it can shudder diagonally on broken surfaces. Once a week or two ago it lurched so badly when I hit a small pothole with the inside rear that I thought I had hit a kerb - I had to check the next day that there isn't a kerb near where it happened to be sure!

Mine will be getting replaced with KW variant 3 at some point.

Thanks again guys most helpful, I think I would also use the KW's I've heard some good things and Ray West from West tuning reccomends them. Anyone done a side by side comparison Coil Overs v DRC?
