Is the Northampton Audi service mob robbing me??

Hello all

I am a bit of a lurker, but I have plucked up the courage to ask you guys for some advice...

The Beast is telling me to service it, at 36,900 miles. I called Northampton Audi to book it in and I was quoted £870 odd inc VAT as it's a "major service."

Am I being robbed? Reading previous posts suggests £450 would be nearer the mark. Is it worthwhile buying 505.01 oil in bulk off eBay and taking it in? Is it worthwhile buying service kits (all the filters) off eBay and taking them in too? Should I go to an independent?

Cheers Rachael

Hi Rachael,

You’ve got a number of options, you could buy the parts from us and save yourself a few "bob" (They are genuine Audi parts from Germany) and take them to the dealer but they will be dearer then a good independent labour wise.

Some owners like the fact that a dealer has stamped the book and are a little worried when it comes to resale that it may put people off if an Audi stamp can’t be seen in the service book. IMO I'd take it to a good independent like MRC, QST or a trusted mechanic and get them to do the work, they'll stamp the book anyway. Unless of course you have an Audi warranty, provided you’ve used genuine Audi parts this shouldn’t effect the warranty.
Oh…. and just got your email re the Phaeton stuff, I’ll sort out a reply.
Cheers
Tom

Also, its worth shopping around the Audi dealers in your area ...... prices can vary enormously on some jobs !

Thanks gents, I have been browsing around to see who's nearby. I just looked at QST, they want £1154 + VAT for a 40k service, maybe Northampton aren't so bad after all! I will call APS tomorrow.

Also call Ben Gilbert service manager at Stoke Audi, you'll be surprised at their lower than average costs.

It is a major service at 40k. Maybe cambelt coming up too!

Definitely ring around.

Rachael,

You might want to check that Northampton Audi are including the cam belt change. My local Audi dealer wanted about the same as you were quoted for the 40,000 mile service, but the cam belt was an additional cost of nearly £1,000... IMO a specialist like QST will be a better bet as they see these cars all the time, whereas franchised dealers don't see so many, due to the age of RS6's so they don't always have a lot of wxperience with them.

a major service at his mileage will probably include a cambelt service & brakes. strong preference is to have this done at a reputable audi dealer. it isn't a simple job and it pays to use people who have done it before. fixed price quote is also a good idea up front.

Hi Shy Rachel

My experience suggests that if you can get to Northampton then APS at Brackley is a nice spin down the A43. Big service should be around £450. They are excellent.

Got taken to the cleaners by Audi for the cambelt at about your mileage. Be very careful if using them to get a written quote which includes everything they are going to do - would still go to APS though.

Brakes - buy the bits from dsgwagen see:

for pads & discs (excellent service) and most competent mechanics can fit them for you.

Good Luck

I am about to have 40k service on mine. My local dealer (dahn sarf) have quoted £630 excluding the cambelt (thankfully the dealer I bought mine off agreed to do it before I bought it 2000 miles ago ) . Apparently an extra £95 if the brake fluid needs changing.
