Cold Weather / Winter tyres

Post by el_ringo » Mon Jul 23, 2007 11:06 pm

Hi,

Since summer is as good as over and I will probably need an Ark instead of a ‘6 if it rains any more I was wondering if anyone has used cold weather tyres on their RS6? I’m toying with getting a set of 18” wheels (currently got standard 19s) and winter boots, but is it a waste of time? Getting some OEM wheels will be hard enough but what do you guys think?

Thanks in advance,

R

Winter tyres are essential in snow/extra cold conditions but not necessarily better in the wet. I have a set of winter tyres/wheels for my RS6 here in Switzerland and will definitely use them once the snow arrives.

I made the mistake of getting specialist winter tyres(contiwintersport), they were the nuts on the one day the outside temperature dropped below 0 degrees, unfortunately they over heated in anything more than that, and became quite unstabble under heavy braking and speeds over 110mph. Just in my experience

I can believe it. They will probably melt at 110 mph :-) really just for lower speed work when it's very cold - then they are a lifesaver. I went straight off the road with normal tyres in my first winter in Switzerland - Lancia Integrale 4X4. The farmer turned up in his tractor with chains, brushed the snow off my tyres and said....aha..summer tyres...

Another anecdote.. My neighbour had two 4X4 Audis...an A8 with winter tyres and an Avant Quattro with summer tyres. The A8 would go straight up the hill without locking the diff or anything. The Avant would not get out of the parking space...
