Cambelt

Post by 996C4 » Mon Apr 02, 2007 11:49 am

Just had the RS6 serviced and the main dealer wants to change the cambelt for crazy money. They aslo said they cant check if it needs doing, they just rip it out.

What do we think about getting a specialist to do it instead, maybe Fontain? How will this affect the warranty / resale?

Thanks everyone.

What have you been quoted ? Main dealer prices can vary enormously ..... from £800 to £1500 pounds as i remember. Fountain probably qualified to undertake the job but it would probably void any warranty you have on the car.

A main dealer was offering a belt cahnge on ebay recently at a competitive price.

Thanks for that, the main dealer was close to £1200.

Dulwich Audi did mine for just over £800 inc other belts and tensioners. Epsom, Crawley and Wimbledon were all in excess of £1100. Ask them how many hours the job is .... should be between 5 and 7 i think.

£1200... what a con!!! I also paid around the £800 at my local stealer, which is still day-light robbery for a cam belt, the dealer was Stoke Audi I believe, I would'nt hesitate about the round-trip journey as in comparison to the price you've been quoted it would save you best part of £700.

Stoke Audi charged my about £600, and another £150 for the water pump as a precaution. Worth a trip for the savings. I live in London so treated it as a day out, as they gave me a new A3 as a loaner.

You can get it done on a Buy-it Now from Stoke Audi on E-bay

I don't know where you're based but you could also try Kim Collins at Quatto Sport in Haywards Heath

Incidentally what are people's fellings at what mileage this should be done - my service book says 40k. I'm up for a 33k/4year service in a few weeks and my main dealer says the 'Audi Computer' says it should be changed now!

I've just done a search on the forums for this and seems like a nest of vipers with no consistency from different audi dealers and audi uk :audibash:
Sooner of 3ys/55k or 40k with no time limit seems to be the contenders!

IIRC the original guide was 3yrs/40Kmiles (obviously whichever occurs first); this was officially revised to a frequency of 3yrs/60Kmiles.

So yours should hopefully have been already done at 3yrs! Your service book (and a receipt from the dealer) should confirm.

Just a question on this, I have a 04 (I dont think the belt has been done) that has only done 29K. I still need to get it done this year sometime?

Yes, required on its 3rd birthday. Not worth risking an award winning cosworth engine for the sake of a relatively cheap rubber belt.
