RS6 Saloon or Avant?

Post by CliveH » Tue Dec 19, 2006 12:23 pm

I'm a little way from my RS6 purchase yet, but this will make an interesting little Christmas debate.. :)

I'm still really torn because :

1. As a rule, I've never liked "estate cars" but I recognise that the Audi RS avants are in a totally different league (oh, and I do like them... ).

2. I don't need the "extra room" of an avant - but in reality, it's only extra headroom - which surprisingly we have in the Minis - you'd be amazed at what we've got in the back of them with the rear seats down!

3. I thought I preferred the lines of the saloon, until I saw Grizz's avant last night.

4. The Audi RS range has traditionally been in avant form - although having said that we have 2 models which were exclusively avant (RS2 and RS4 B5) and 2 which aren't (RS6 and RS4 B7).

5. Although the saloon is rarer, they're a bit cheaper because they're in less demand (this must be telling me something).

Oh, decisions, decisions, and I'm still at least 9 months away from buying...!

I know that it's all down to personal taste, but I'd be interested to hear why you chose what you did  (please also vote)

Tough call, but as I am 24... I would only own a saloon for now. If I were older with a kid or 3 then it would be the avant.

Like the B5 RS4, the RS6 plus only came in avant.... Easy question, no brainer answer :P

That was my point Tom - all the avant does is give you more headroom - not more boot space.

Do I assume that's a vote for the saloon then?

NO NO NO ..... AVANT ! :)

The Avant will hold its value better. If your looking for a big fast estate, you have very limited options .... realistically its only a Merc E55 AMG which is more rare and more expensive.

Also, its not just headroom .... the opening of the estate is much bigger and lower, hence you can fit much more in with also much more ease. Try putting a fridge in the saloon ! Or anything that you have to slide in. Do you have a dog ? The estate comes with a dog guard too :)

RS models until very recently only really known for their estates ... RS2 & RS4 (old shape) were only available in estate form. If your buying a fast Audi it was partly coz you wanted an estate or because you knew estates actually were really cool :)

The estate attracts less attention from the cops. And imagine the look on Porsche drivers when they get blitzed by an estate !!

And colour .... Black (if garaged), Daytonna Grey, Misano red, Silver, Blue, Green .... is my order of preference.

Good luck ...

Guys - this one's a no-brainer!!

First of all we need to realise that in October a Gallup Poll voted the Volvo V70 the nation's no 1 Passion Wagon - clearly one has all that space for a reason. The RS6 should have won of course, but we have the disadvantage of rarity in such polls. 8)

Clearly on this basis Misano has to be the top colour - it shows flair and excitement all the way!!

Dave

PS - just upgrading from V70R to RS6 - in red of course!!

Pretty much as has been said above really... When I bought the RS6 last year I was in my 20's (OK I was 29), and this is by far the biggest car I have ever owned, the Avant was a step too far this time round. But I would more than likely go Avant next time when I'm an old codger  Saloon boot is more than big enough, granted that it wont fit a table and chairs, or a fridge freezer but that is a once every 5 years task for me so not an issue.

Its funny as I sat in a new RS4 yesterday (with the armchair seats, not the bucket ones) and it felt really quite small, that isnt helped by the fact that I am a lanky bugger at about 6'4". There was NO legroom behind my chair at all, whereas in the Beast I can comfortably take 4 or 5 adults and their stuff to Devon or to the Rally (which I do at least 4 times a year). I would never have seen an A4 as "small" two years ago, funny how personal circumstances change in life.

I went through this dilema when I was buying.
The only thing that stopped me getting an estate
was the pure fact that my friends and colleagues would
have immense amounts of fun, asking me where my lab
and my travel rug were.

Im only 33, im still looking young, and I intend to stay
young as long as possible !!

resale value is irrelevant to me, I wouldnt buy an RS6 if
I could afford the depreciation.

being a potential RS6 purchaser, its avant, avant, avant for me !!!

thats A4 tdi avant (96), A6 tdi avant (05-old shape), RS6 avant (soon)

having two small children makes you realise you can never have too much space.....cots, cleaning kit, nappies, double buggies, occasional adult in the rear imbetween the 2 kiddie seats......

recently borrowed an A4 avant (B7), and even thought that was small !!

also the avant seems to hold on to its price premium and desirability for ever and ever ! I realised this when I sold the 96 A4 avant privately without any hassle, and for what I considered a fair price, when the saloons seemed almost worthless..

and another thing - the avants look better

...just my 2p worth....
