Disabling the Passenger Airbags

Post by GaryC » Tue Oct 04, 2005 11:02 am

I know this is probably a case of RTFM, but we've recently moved house and the handbook is lying in a box somewhere...

So does anyone know what the procedure is for (temporarily) disabling the passanger side airbags in the RS6? I'm planning a trip with my two and a half year old son soon while my wife is away for a couple of days, and I know he'll love being able to have his car seat in the front.

Gary

Stumbled across this today after you've probably R'd TFM and found no help at all. I queried this with my dealer after my previous A6 was switchable via a key in the glove box, and they said that you can't do it temporarily. Maybe can be done premanently via VAGCOM or whatever, but dealers will wan you to sign a disclaimer.

Its a happy day when they're old enough to fit in a forward facing Recaro Start or whatever's good these days.

No help to you, but at least the consolation is you've not missed an answer before starting the trip.

Thanks Adam.

I phoned up Audi CS last night and the CS lady said - after being on hold for quite a while as she checked with their technical dept - that it was possible but only by taking it into the dealers. It's a bit annoying really on a £60k car, especially as my sister's little £8k clio has a switch in the car you can press.

My son sits in a forward facing britax seat, and after some research it seems it's probably 'ok' (though not totally advisable) for him to sit in the front so long as I set the seat as far back as it will go.

You have to do that on my Clio too, just to get the seatbelt to go round the block on the ISOFIX car seat. Unfortunately, once they put on a bit more weight its too much of a squeeze, so even though the seat can theoretically go upto a certain weight or age, the child won't fit comfortably in the front (even though its also a Renault car seat). However, by this stage they're also a bit embarrased about using a seat when their peers are in boosters.

Switch is great, although I used to forget to turn it back on for my wife, then discretely did it as soon as I realised.

interestingly on the standard equipment list (not extra) it says 'front passenger airbag isolation'.

i was looking at a few RS6's this weekend to buy and one of the dealers was trying to find it but could not. He said it was their coz of the isofix particularily.

ISOFIX is was an optional extra, and most of the cars I looked at didn't seem to have it.

Which equipment list does it say that the airbag isolation is standard?
