Noise from Power Steering

Post by mwcltd » Thu Feb 17, 2005 11:35 pm

Sometimes I get a groaning noise from the power steering when I am turing the wheel fairly slowly at speeds less than 5mph. The feel of the steering does not change and everything seems to be working okay. Has anyone experienced this and it so, what should I do to overcome the problem.

There was a groaning noise when I had to pay for my 6 Plus but otherwise it's been fine!

Cheers, MartynC

Yes, I've been getting this intermittently. It also happened occasionally on my old S4. It doesn't sound urgent (famous last words) so I was planning to have it looked at during the next service.

Mine too!! My 6 has done 15k. I decided that I was far too busy to go to the dealer so the jolly nice chaps at Audi assistance sent a tech round to listen from cold in the morning when it was worst.

He found that the pas fluid was below the dipstick. He topped it up but it was still noisy (all the time - the groan is just at low speed/idle turning on hardish lock).

I booked it in and Audi Cust care sorted me out a new A6 to use.

The dealer found a loose pipe and tightened it.

I was happy with that explanation until it started doing it again today.

Looks like another trip required.

Just to confirm, the pas is noisy on mine when cold even when not turning the wheel. The low manouvering groan reminds me of a wet finger being run round a glass rim.

And me, Mine has done 15000 mile and noticed loud wine/screech when at slow speeds (eg. car parks) took car in to Lancaster Audi (Manchester) no fault found.
Somebody please tell me what this noise is because its f*****g annoying.

Surely that's just a slipping belt when the PAS is under high load?

Mine was a leak from one of the steering fluid hoses. They replaced the hose clip, topped up the fluid- sorted!
