What Fuel?

Post by Kev.S » Thu Aug 19, 2004 7:01 pm

Anyone advise me on what fuel to put in? My local Esso garage only does 95 RON so I'll have to travel further afield.

Shell Optimax is generally considered the S/RS drivers choice on here...it really does make a difference.

I stick Optimax in and that's all my old TT drank. Some guys in the new 3.2 cars (non turbo) haven't found any difference though. I don't quite understand why as if you have 98.6RON then surely you get a bigger and better bang than with 97RON?

I have been running Optimax, exclusively, after the first 1000 miles.

Thanks all- I've just got back from a couple of hundred mile trip on Optimax and I'm impressed. It's actually doing 2 mpg more than my S6 did! Running nice and smoothly with no power loss either.

In a pinch, Esso's 97 RON Super will suffice with no noticable loss of performance IMHO. I normall go about 2.5 miles out of my way for Optimax, it's only when I'm out a particular place with no Shell for miles around that I "slum it" at Esso...

How about Tesco's new 99Ron Super Unleaded, anyone tried that. Had a go and it seems fine

I have tried all higher RON fuels and Optimax takes some beating. I have also tried Turbo Rally fuel at £4 per litre and 109 octane. This does give extra performance but the £/mile ratio is somewhat impractical. When I spoke with MTM they recommended Optimax for UK cars although in Germany they do have higher octane pump fuel.

I nearly always use Tesco Finest as its on the way home and bloody good value. Little more than regular unleaded at other stations.

Runs great with it but cannot say that its anything special.

Maybe I should do a return trip and try out normal and super on each leg and really see if it makes a difference. I personnaly think that the onboard EMS will probably not allow the fuel (within reason) make much difference to the engine running. I doubt that if you go over 96/97 RON there is any improvement.
