Good price for a used RS6 ??

Post by eagle » Tue Apr 27, 2004 8:23 am

Hi all, just about to do a deal on a RS6 Avant, just wanted to know if you lot think its a good price or not, its a early 2003 car (52 plate) with about 18k on the clock, one owner, normal spec etc. The deal works out to about 42k from an Audi dealer. I think it looks cheap but i know the market for RS6's seems to change week by week.

Cheers

Scott

p.s. any easy way to check if its been 'chipped' by a tunning company, i've never driven another RS6 so have no idea on how quick they feel.

You have checked the RS 6 prices on Audi's web site haven't you? That's probably your best guide to what else is out there and at what price. http://www.audi.co.uk/usedcars/index.jsp

18k isn't too bad mileage for the plate, my 52 plate late 2002 has one 34k miles and my dealer told me they'd give me about £35k for it against an order for an A8 from the factory, which would take 8-12 weeks so they'd expect some extra miles in the meantime.

With 18k on, ask to see the service book and have a good look through it, not only to check at what miles it's been serviced, but also check out when the next one is due and what it involves - I think just under 10k miles for each service is about right, but even a "small" service is oil, filter, plugs etc. Larger services can cost quite a bit more, so if it's due one very soon ask about them agreeing to either service it FOC now or when it becomes due. Also ask them if they serviced it previously, and if they did, when the brakes were changed (discs and pads) and how much pad material is left all round (the brakes are expensive to service).

Check the brake discs carefully (especially the fronts) for either severe dark blue colouring, a raised lip around the outer edge of the disc or faint zig-zaggy lines which are actually micro cracks starting to form in the composite disc material. If you find any of this, the brakes have been well-used and possibly overheated (easily done - it's a 2 tonne car that goes very quickly) and you should ask to have them replaced, perhaps even as a warranty job. I had my front discs replaced (£700 worth of work with VAT!) at 11k miles after they started to crack at about 9k.

I'd been looking for a decent secondhand one - hoping to pay mid £40k's - and had noticed that the prices seemed to be firming such that there are very few on offer under 50k. Then a dealer offered me an amazing deal on a brand new one which I couldnt refuse which sort of blows the theory. There are obviously still a few left hanging around in the Audi system so it may be worth considering the new option...

Can I ask what sort of deal? My local dealer doesn't seem to be trying very hard and I'd be more than willing to travel to save some pennies.
