I guess the only advice I can give is get a set of the Dunlop Snow tyres, awesome in heavy/torential rain and snow, but if you think you are going acorss fields of snow buy a land rover

I think the chains would only be for really bad conditions with packed ice below

Hope this helps

Or going downhill on snow I remember that Evo's RS6 had to be taken down from Meribel on a truck last winter as it wouldn't stay on the road
They are a must without winter tyres when conditions get hairy unless you want to end up in a ditch or on a roundabout in rush hour traffic like I did once. Very embarrasing

Don't know for the RS6 as I have an RS4 but I guess it would be the same, Winter tyres are much much better and you will be surprised how much extra grip they give, they are also a a bit narrower to give more bite in the snow so you would probably need narrower wheels. I would however take a set of chains you may have to special order them because of the size and Audi state that they should only be fitted to the front. The alps are full of rs4's don't see why this year they won't be joined by rs6's

Why only the fronts? for the snow chains that is?

And the snow tyres do fir standard rims, 235 x 40 I bought on a set of standard rims from Charles

Sold them on now

I'm sure I read somewhere that the 19" wheels won't take kindly to snow chains. Audi do sell 18"ers in an 8J (I think, or is it 8.5?) as winter wheels though.

No they wont fit the 19" rims but are OK on the standard 18 x 8.5

Official Audi winter tire size is 225/18. They offer special rims to match the narrower tires. I got hold of a pair of snow chains for that size easily at a motorway gas station, no problem. They are indeed intended only for the front, and if I recall correctly, they ask you to switch off the ESP to allow for the asymetry, but check the manual for details.
