Tiptronic shift times

Post by martian » Mon Aug 18, 2003 12:35 pm

Anybody know if there's anyway to prevent the transmission upshifting when driven in tip function? It's really annoying when you downshift coming up to a long corner and the tip 'times out' back to full AUTO just as you're in the middle of the bend...
Can Audi adjust the time of the shift ?... or even better set the the box to stay in tip until deselected?

I presume that you don't wish to go into 'full' manual mode by moving the selector over to the right hand side of the gate.

I guess that the timeout interval /may/ be one of the parameters which can be adjusted by use of VAG-COM, but I don't have any definitive info.

I am considering setting my gearbox into 'Old style tiptronic' mode, such that it when in full manual control it will only downshift automatically when stationary.

The times seem to be variable, based on your driving style. To get a feel for the variance in revert times, try this: Drive at a steady cruise speed above about 45mph in D and hit the tip + button. You should be in 5th already, but will swap into 'manual' 5th. Hold the steady speed and it should soon change back in to Drive.

Now slow down and click a couple of times on - to get into 3rd and floor it away again. This time, it should be longer before it reverts to Drive.

This variability might be hitting you on the runup to corners, being off the gas to slow down or just holding a steady speed and then hitting the - button to downshift might fool it into thinking that you're not doing anything particularly important, so it reverts back sooner.

You might be able to slow down a bit more into the corner and then apply more power so you are gaining speed throughout, but some corners may not be so conducive to this tactic...

Your only other option might be to go to manual tip mode. I use manual tip almost exclusively out of town as it's far more controllable.
