Can you please diagnose a fault with me.
After I got the car back from it being off the road for 3 years, there’s an odd fluttering noise and very slight vibration that kicks in at 40mph, and goes onto a whine as the speed increases, from the front axel. At 40mph it sounds a bit like when you wind the window down and you get a wind buffering. My first thought was a loose under tray. Then someone suggested that it might be the new poly bushes I put in after they had experienced the same thing, but I only did the rear end.
I’m 80% sure that slight vibration and sound is related to a failing wheel baring on the front axel, especially as when I turn to the left at 40mph the noise quietens a little (but not when turning to the right). What gives me the 20% of doubt is that if I left off the accelerator the noise reduces.
The other issue I have is that when I select a gear occasionally I get a clunk. I did replace the gearbox oil some 1k miles ago, but this was just before the car went off the road, but will change it again to see if it helps.
With the wheels being off the car and the hub being exposed to the elements for three years it kind of makes sense to me, but what do you think?
