Losing coolant

Hi all, I have recently bought a very cheap C5 that would probably have ended up being chopped for parts although underneath it is a very sound car with liow owners, full service history and only 89k on it. The car has sat for 3 years, 2 years inside and a year outside. Water hads been getting in underneath the seal on the scuttle where the pollen filter sits as this has cracked at the housing. The car runs and drive although the BCM was sitting in an inch of water but after careful cleaning, hopefully will be brought back to life.
I topped the coolant up after picking the car up as it was low and let it run for half an hour to get some heat into it and have a check over. Went back the next morning and the header tank was nearly empty. The heater hoses going into the bulkhead were also cold after topping up and running again and didn't clear until the engine was revved a few time so presume had air in them. Are the heater matrixs bad for leaking on the car, there is nothing underneath it and couldn't see any leaks. Is there anything in particular to look on the engines. The car was stopped for a gearbox fault which I think may be the broken pipe as 1st to 2nd changes were vbery clunky but the rest was reasonable. Some one has grafted a B7 bumper and grille onto the car which looks hideous. I managed to pick a good bonnet and grille up yesterday as well as a complete spare gearbox for handy money so not all bad.
