Fan On Full Speed When AirCon Is On

Post by lewp » Wed Jan 24, 2024 11:18 am

Hey Everyone!

I have a 2004 Avant and i noticed that when the A/C is on i assume small fan is running at what sounds like full power, as soon as i turn it to E-CON you hear it whirr down and stop should these not be spinning slowly with the A/C on?

My thoughts
Fan fuse under the dash
Fan control module?

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

This sounds normal to me.

Yeah, sounds like a jet engine spooling up.

You can always scan for fault codes to put your mind at rest (or, more likely, make you soil your underwear).

Also, FON.

As you look at the car the right hand fan is not working its really hard to move by hand so thats my next investigation!

If the big fan is faulty it’s costly.
If it’s the smaller fan I have one if needed.

If your lucky might be a bad connection.

If it’s hard to move by hand, that’s a bad sign.

You just need to put it in service position. No biggy. See my timing belt DIY in the FAQ for what's involved.

I did a bit more investigating on this one while i was fettling the weekend..

The shroud was actually unclipped from the surround, i managed to clip it back in and the fan spins freely, it however does not do anything with output tests done via Vagcom.

It is also the little fan so i dont feel so bad that the cars going to die!

Steve if you wanna sell me the little fan let me know! if i dont use it il of course always keep it as a spare for another poor soul in need!

It might have blown a fuse when straining against the cowl.

Is that the fuse under the steering wheel cowling or is that the fan control module?

There’s a fuse behind the knee bolster. Big one.
