Hello Gents

Just after a bit of advice regarding topping up the gearbox after reinstallaion of the engine , looking to try and get the engine&gearbox reinstalled at the weekend.

When removing the engine the gearbox is diconnected frrm the cooler up front so a fair bit of fluid is lost , once the engine is back in is there a procedure for topping up before starting?

I have read the guide for changing the gearbox oil and filter but there no specific info regarding what to do after reinstalling the gearbox and then topping up.

Do i just top it up as much as I can before starting the engine then follow the procedure from the guide , what have people done when they have reinstalled there engine.

Just want to be a as safe as possible with the gearbox, any advice would be apreciated.

Sorry you got no answer to this.
Unless there was a specific reason not to, I'd do a gearbox service at the same time - so drop all the gearbox oil, change the filters and refill.
Potentially you might want to fill the box, start motor for a few seconds, stop, fill gearbox again a couple of times - assuming the torque converter is empty on the 1st start, that is.

Huh. Never saw this thread come up.

Yeah, what Matt said.

I suppose you could start the engine, top the box up and *then* service the gearbox. That way you'd flush a decent amount and give you a chance of getting any crap or contamination out that might have appeared after the engine work.

Thanks Gents

A few broken bolts have slowed my progress getting the engine back in so Im hoping to get it done in the coming weeks, I have the service kit for the gearbox but wasnt sure if it was better to do it once it was back in and connected to the cooler or do it while it was out and then add fluid once its connected to cooler and the engone has been run a bit.

I think I will service it in the car and connected to the cooler, I have a fair bit fluid so I will probably top up , run the engine(hopefully I havent made any major balls up with the repairs) to get fluid to the cooler then service and follow the fill up procedure.

Will let you know how it goes.

That first start after engine out is a bit of a sphincter quiverer. Just make sure you’ve followed the manual as you reinstall and check everything off the list.
