Normal oil and coolant temperatures
Normal oil and coolant temperatures
Hello - I’m new to the car so don’t have a handle on what’s normal for oil and coolant temps.
On the dials, Coolant never goes above 90, oil sits at about 120, perhaps just over. This is just normal road driving situations around town, perhaps a 30 minute drive. The fans come on when I park it up and turn off the engine.
Iv checked the owners manual and I’m not going in the red zones and I don’t have any warning lamps and it makes sense that the needles sit in the middle of the gauge. So no warning signs here.
However, the heat the engine bay kicks out is surprising to me, I can feel hot air being kicked out under the car and through the wheel arches. Is this just the nature of the car or do you think those temps are a little high?
Thanks
Andrew

Re: Normal oil and coolant temperatures
The RS6 has massive heat soak. I'm not surprised at what you're saying about the heat from the arches and engine bay.
Coolant temp display is pinned at 90 unless it goes waaaaaay above that. If you want to know what your coolant temp really is, then you'll need to use the Vagcom or get the climatronic to display the coolant temp (see FAQ).
However, I don't think your oil temp at 120 is normal unless you're hammering it. Mine stays at 90 under normal driving. It goes up to 120 when I'm having fun. I wait for the temps to come back down to 90 at idle before shutting off the engine.

Thanks.
Any ideas why the oil might be running at 120? As it’s not in the red zone and I don’t have any warning lights is it something to worry about?
Cambelt, water pump and thermostat soon. Perhaps the thermostat is the issue?

Re: Normal oil and coolant temperatures
Perhaps some previous owner has deleted the transmission cooler.
Or maybe your temp sender in the gearbox harness is overreading. Doesn't seem likely, but you can check with an IR thermometer on the pan.
Since this is a new car for you, I would want to replace the ATF and strainer for peace of mind.

Re: Normal oil and coolant temperatures
My oil temperature sits at 85 ish and stays there all day with normal driving even in the extreme weather we are currently getting.
Spirited drive may hit 90
Mind you new fans, radiator, oil cooler and hoses. I would expect to see favourable temperatures.
If my oil temp was at 120. I would be a bit concerned.

Re: Normal oil and coolant temperatures
I have got gearbox service booked in at the end of the month
.
Transmission cooler delete? I can see the oil cooler installed in the front of the car still…. Is this a common mod? Why would anyone do it?
I will get a thermometer on the sump pan as you suggest

Re: Normal oil and coolant temperatures
Just to check, do your fans run after shutdown on most occasions?

Re: Normal oil and coolant temperatures
Yes after turning the engine off, the fans stay on for a short period.
By the way the small fan will come on when the air conditioning is on.
The large fan has its own controller built in.

Re: Normal oil and coolant temperatures
Thanks.
I can see some pink staining on the radiator, so Iv got a leak for sure. I’m not really going through any coolant though; so it’s minimal.
I guess what il do is the gearbox service first, then the Cambelt service and associated parts and perhaps get the rad and the cooler and hoses replaced at the same time while the front of the car is off.
I want to keep the car longterm so investing a bit now for peace of mind probably makes sense. 4 years but only 25k miles since the belt was done so it’s time really.
Would a faulty thermostat result in a higher oil temp reading?

Re: Normal oil and coolant temperatures
Yeah, could do. Read the actual coolant temps and you’ll get a better idea.

Will do thanks
Re: Normal oil and coolant temperatures
Coolant temperature is pretty much spot on 90C around town read with DashCmd app / obd reader. Fluctuates between 83 and 95 after a bit of revving. It won’t read the oil temperature unfortunately.
Re: Normal oil and coolant temperatures
I have a feeling that there is a mechanical thermostat in the oil cooler circuit. I need to check the workshop manual.
I’m pretty sure oil temp is available to read with the Vagcom. I’ll check on mine later, but it’s immobilised due to seized rear caliper.

Re: Normal oil and coolant temperatures
I know you can monitor the gearbox oil temperature. As I check the temperature when doing a oil and filter replacement.
So I reckon you will be able to monitor engine oil temperatures.
I Would suggest obtaining VCDS cable if you are keeping the car.
Sorry I sold my spare one two days ago.
It will pay for itself many times over.

Re: Normal oil and coolant temperatures
Ok thanks - would it throw a code if a thermostat wasn’t working?
