Removing rear knuckle and ABS sensor

Post by ChrisA » Sun Feb 26, 2023 3:28 pm

I’ve a feeling that I’ve already asked this question but how do I remove the ABS sensor and knuckle?

I’ve already got the coilover, upper and lower control arms, ARB and the track rod off. The screw from the ABS sensor is cleanly out but the sensor seems welded in (not that I’ve tried to persuade it to move too harshly).

Probably just rusted firmly. Looks like they must use Salt on the roads where you live, looks pretty corroded. Try soaking it real well with some penetrating oil over a few hours.

Proceed with caution - I checked just this week and there's both no OE rear ABS sensors available, nor any aftermarket ones, and not even any 2nd hand ones on ebay.

You might end up being the guinea pig to find an alternate one that can be made to fit. They are almost certainly just rusted in.
A bit of time soaking in penetrating oil might help, but on the old saab I had, I had to break the sensor off and then drill the innerds out.

Cheers Matt. I hear and understand your reservations but I can got to all this effort with cleaning the other parts only to leave the knuckle looking like that and I know I’m not going to be satisfied with the finish cleaning it in place.

I looked in the Bentley and it said the sensor had to be removed before taking off the knuckle. If I was to remove it an the next connector once the knuckle is off maybe I might be able to persuade it to come out from the inside.

So with that in mind how do I remove the bearing/hub and axel from the knuckle (I have a feeling my terminology is way off here)?
