Power steering leak

Post by MikebRS6 » Wed Jan 25, 2023 12:56 pm

[*]hi all, need some help please, long story but my car has ended up in a local garage (not my usual Audi specialist), they are being really helpful but struggling to find where the issue lies.

My power steering stopped, fluid leaking out of the bottom, they have been unable to find the leak and due to it being so cramped they are saying they want to drop the engine out. Feel like this is a bit extreme but I’m no expert. Any thoughts?

Sounds to me like they don't want the job. Whereabouts are you? Can you get the car to your usual garage?

I had a similar problem a few years ago.
In my case the hoses split. Had to have new power hoses fitted. They had to move the engine out of the way to install the new hoses.

I now have a slight weep from the steering rack which means a replacement rack is to be installed
See my thread.

Are you rapidly losing the power steering fluid from the reservoir.

As shopp says. Can you get your car to your usual garage.

I had thought about getting it to my specialist, only problem is they can’t store the car and the next appointment is in March.

As soon as I fill the reservoir it’s starts dripping out the bottom somewhere, I doubt it would be directly from the pump would it, so I’m expecting it’s from a hose, but they can’t see it.

If they are worth their salt they should be able to identify the area the leak is coming from.
In my case I was told that the hoses were the cause of the leak before they stripped anything off the car.

Surely they can use a boroscope for those hard to see places.

On my old C5 S6 I lost the power steering and dumped the fluid from the system. I was fortunate and identified the leak by refilling and then with someone moving the steering slightly was able to identify the leak was a split hose used a mirror and torch to locate it. I think it was on the return side and I was lucky it could be replaced without much hassle.. albeit it was a little bit less cramped than the RS. If I can find the pictures I will try to confirm which hose it was. Fingers crossed you can eyeball the leak and get it sorted without the engine needing moved.

Is the car running when you see the leak immediately after re-filling?
