Steve - what was the conclusion regard choices of part number and so forth? Given the aggro you've had, I think I might try and get one in the stores, refurbed and ready for future use.
Any recomendations on the best place to find one?

Still waiting to remove my rack Matt.
Initially I was trying to get a rack with the part no ending in 52 c. This was the part no that the garage informed me was the part I needed.
I must of found around 6 Available racks for sale but all of them ended in 65c. All found on eBay from cars being broken for parts.

Eventually the company that was doing the overhaul informed me that the 65c rack was suitable for my car.
I reckon that when we remove my rack it will be stamped 65c.
So I should end up with a spare rack when the work has been done.

I suspect they both fit just fine, but they probably tweaked a valve or seal internally over the production life of the cars, so gave it a different part number

I suspect one reference is a subassembly of the other.

If you fancy, I'd be happy to buy your old one off you to use as a base one to refurbish.
I know one of the hydraulic connectors on mine is fairly corroded, so "one day" it'll start leaking. Be good to have a refurbished spare in the stores.

Matt. Yes mate mine will be available for sale very soon. They seem to go for around £220 to £250 on eBay as they are. Haven’t had the recon bill yet but I was told around £300 for a fully reconditioned rack returned to you like new.
When I was doing some research on the rack it didn’t surprise me that the seals can weep/leak.
Something like 2000 psi in the unit.

Yeah, 1-2000 psi is pretty standard in power steering. When I built the boat, I used a generic chevrolet power steering pump and the special marine steering hydraulic rams - but I had to get parker hydraulic hoses with crimp ends made up to rig it all together.

Hi Steve,

How did you get on in the end, is yours all fixed now?

Only I've been trying to source a steering rack for mine for weeks now, and had the same problem.. 4B8422052CX is no longer available. (The X at the end of the part number by the way just means its an 'exchange' item - So basically a refurbished one)

I use to work in parts for VW so had access to Etka. But it's coming up as obsolete from factory and there's no stock in stores at all in the UK.

Would be kean to know how you got on as I'm really struggling to even find any one who reconditions them.

Mines a 2004 saloon by the way.

Angus

BTW Steve, I found the answer to the part number conundrum for you and it's exactly as Ben reckoned:

I'm also seeing that people are advertising the 4B8 422 065 rack as fitting the RS6, but then according to the parts catalogue, 4B8 422 065 C is the correct part, and the non-suffixed part number is for the V8 S6, not the RS6. So be cautious on your ebay searches.

Yes mate. Two separate rack overhaul companies confirmed that 4B8 422 065C is the right rack for our cars.

In fact I know it is as the one I bought definitely came off a 2003 Audi rs6 c5.
This rack has now been fully overhauled and I am just waiting on the garage to schedule my car in to swop the racks over.
I am betting that my rack will have the same part number.

Doofuss. Plenty of racks from rs6 c5 motors being stripped for parts on eBay seem to be going for around £250 to £300.
And there are companies who specialise fully overhauling them for around £300. Apparently they look like new when you get them back.
Let me know if I can be of further help.

There's no bet - it certainly will, as per the screenshot above.
Who did you use for the overhaul?

I forget the name at the mo. But I can get it from the garage and provide update.
The garage recommended them. Then I went online to check them out. I was happy so gave the go ahead.

Been spending a lot of time at doctors and hospitals just lately. So please forgive my memory lapses.

This is who I would, by default, use. Obviously there are plenty of other people who I am sure are equally capable.
