Wing Mirror Glass

Noticed yesterday that my wing mirror glass is going a bit copper colour. I know replacement tinting glass is not available, but does normal heated mirror glass (which I think is available) also fit our housings?

Basically yes.
I think your mirror glass is actually identical to mine (2002 S8) and I have the same issue.
Only I have a full set of spare non-dimming mirrors that I know work fine as they were on the car before I sourced the dimming ones.
I don't think you'll find any proper dimming ones now, unless Audi Tradition still have them in stock. Used ones will be ready to fail if not already doing so.
My spares are slightly tinted (anti-dazzle maybe) though, not plain.

Matt. One of my mirrors went the same way a few years ago. Audi wanted almost £400 for new glass.
I got a non dimming door mirror off eBay for about £10 and it was a straight fit.
Although there was a extra plug fitting which is not required.
My other door mirror has now gone the same way and I will replace that with non auto dimming.
The loss of auto dimming door mirrors doesn’t bother me as I do very little night driving.
Unlike the rear view auto dimming mirror which I have retained thanks to mirror John.

I bought one recently from Audi Tradition. You checked there? Just had a quick look and they seem to have the RS6 mirror glass. You'd need to check your exact part number though. There's a multitude in the parts catalogue.

Yeah, not cheap though. That mirror glass appears to cross-reference to A3, A4, A6 and A8 models, so i would have thought that if you don't want to spend 300 EUR on the mirror then any compatible glass would fit. I would prefer heated, definitely. I really use those on the Passat.
It hurt to spend that much on wing mirror glass, but I wanted the OE part.

Ah! So there might be an OE one available from Audi Tradition? Will they ship to the UK now?
My current mirror is already the replacement I sourced some years back as a spare. I think I still have a spare passenger side one in the stores somewhere that I’ll check, both have gone a bit bronze now.

Don't think they'll deliver to the UK. Yay Brexit. I'll be driving to Germany soonish. I can get one delivered there and bring it back for you if you want.

I did ask Mirror John back when we did the rear view mirror and he said his supplier didn’t do one at the time. However I’m happy to approach him again to see if anything could be done. I dare say to get a ball rolling we would want to know rough numbers and a realistic price we would be willing to pay for a set (I dare say we would need to commit to both sides each to make it worth their while setting up to build them).

One thing I’ve spotted is that “our” generation glass is different. Now I believe there are some film based products which may mean a small production run is perhaps more plausible.

Replaced both of mine in the last few years with aftermarket A6 standard (with heated element).
One big problem though - the new ones didn’t have the black surround on the glass. It was possible to remove off the old ones but slightly different shape so didn’t fit.

Do you need that edging? I presume it serves a purpose on the dimming mirrors, but not necessary on the non-dimming ones.

I don’t think you need it. I reckon it just covers the very edge of the glass to seal properly but it also has a metal mech inside - possibly for the dimming??
It does leave a slightly bigger gap around the glass though.

Oh, isn't the non-dimming glass a bit bigger?

The black surround is a seal because the glass has multiple layers one of which is I think sort of liquid.
Newer types of dimming glass (and I think the interior one) use a different technology.
If you really want an OEM one from Audi Tradition then A8Parts (Prestige) can get it shipped to them in the UK as they are a registered dealer; obviously there's a fee for that and double shipping.
