Rear end suspension rebuild

I thought I’d make a post showing the progress of my rear end rebuild (now that there is some ).

As most of you know I brought some 19” Rotors to fit to the RS. Sadly they didn’t fit over the standard front callipers. This lead to making some spacers to see what width was required. 12.5mm ply was perfect so I brought some 12mm spacers which made the stance look awesome however, with the wider stance the wheels now rubbed the arch lining.

Not a problem I thought, she’s sitting on Bilstein PSS9, I’ll just lift her up. Unfortunately the Billies were so corroded I couldn’t for the life of me move the base plate.

So after a bit of back and forth I brought a new set of PSS9s and ancillary’s and fitted the fronts. These were very straight forward to fit however the backs were proving to be a pain to remove, probably due to the kids climbing all over me every time I attempted to have a go.

I’ve now decided to get a mobile mechanic (Ade) to get them off as it’s taken nearly a year to get to this point.

I’ve asked Ade to remove the rear coilovers, upper and lower control arms, front and rear ARBs and front and rear callipers.

In the pouring rain he put a few hours in and got the NSR coilover, disc and calliper off.

It’s so nice to see a bit of progress and I’m really looking forward to seeing the end results.

Also, as you can see in the picture the off side drive shaft has a patch of corrosion. Is this common, is it anything to worry about, can it be tarted up or am I best off replacing the drive shafts?

It’s only cosmetic. You could give it a bit of a sanding down and use some hammerite black on it (not the textured stuff).

In all honesty I couldn’t give you and honest impartial review as they’re the only disc I’ve experienced on a 6 and I’ve yet to push the car to a point where I’ve had to rely on the brakes. However i can’t say they’ve given me cause for concern and they look smart.

Man I love those wheels, so hard to find down here.

Seem to be ten a penny over here. One thing I would say is that OEM Rotors don’t offer much in the way of a lip for reskimming, where as the copies have a lot of meat on them for diamond cutting. It would be interesting to know if there’s much weight difference between the OEM and copies.

So the rears are stripped back now with only a few more parts to come off.

I was wondering if anyone knew how or if it’s possible to split the plastic arms from the retaining clip of these sensors so I can clean them up (which I think are for the DCR?)?

Also, again in the front arch, what is this cylinder to the right of the two brake pipes doing? I’d like to get that bracket off for powder coating but that item looks expensive, important and fragile.

Those are the level sensors for the headlight levelling. It should be possible to remove the sensor. Can’t remember how though. The DRC doesn’t have any sensors.

The cylinder looks like the connection point for the DRC shock, presumably no longer present.

They’ve got replica’s on eBay, do you know if they reliable or if OEM are still available?

And there’s a headlight levelling sensor on the back too?

DRC no longer fitted and Grizz said it would be a PITA to refit. So is there a point further back that it can be removed to?

Not really. It’s all intertwined. I’d just leave it. That’s what I did. Maybe someone one day will want to restore it. Who knows.

Not faulty, just rusty at the clamps. Will take them off and see what I can do with them. Might have to tape them up and paint if I can’t split them.

I done a full resend rebuild a couple of years ago on my rs6 if you have any question.

I did have a second complete subframe that I stripped down, cleaned and then fitted all my parts to. The. One weekend me and a mate swapped them over
