Can anyone tell me what these pipes are for...... I think they need replacing ..... I couldnt believe how they were when I saw them today ....

I know this looks bad hense the post ..... Im well aware its bad.
I hope it holds on for a bit .....

Hi Phil

They are your engine oil cooler pipes.
Leave them alone until you get some new ones as they will be seized and will strip the threads when you try to get them apart. They will undo fine from the oil filter housing end but not the cooler. If you want to replace them you will end up doing both of them, gearbox/engine oil cooler and both the gearbox oil cooler pipes which are on the other side.
The pipes are no longer available from Audi but oil cooler is and it’s about £1000.
Try RS Carparts in Germany they make the pipes and they are good quality.

Are they liable to leak or burst .... are they under loads of pressure? Reason I ask is because on Friday we have to make a journey which is about a 100 mile round trip.

I don’t think they will let go as if they were on their way out they would be damp or sweating with oil, they are just abit crusty. they run under whatever oil pressure the engine creates. If they burst it would empty your engine of oil very quickly.

Can you link me the the 4 or so pipes I need? cant seem to change site to English....

Looking at RS Carparts Germany for my replacement lower engine oil lines, if that is the correct name for them?
As you all may have seen my hard pipes are also very rusty! Am I correct in thinking that these new lines wont include ALL the hard lines? Pic one has a part hardline, however as you can see in my picture below the lines run from the braided parts towards the back of the engine. not sure about the other side configuration wise....
I just want to safeguard my engine by ensuring /maintaining oil pressure etc.

These 3 lines also work out very very expensive..... surely there is a more cost affective solution ???? Working it out to be approx £566 imported

and if thats for mainly just the braided parts then .....WOW!

Any further advice would be greatly appreciated.

I may be wrong but replacing those may be a tad difficult. Is that also an engine out jobby?


Edit: just checked under the car. They're well reachable though good luck getting a wrench in there... Probably there's a creative way to doing them.

The other side sure you'll see other lines but those go to the box

quick thing: did you mean 815C and 816C???

2 LINKS I have open - same year 2003 my previous window states:

4B3 317 815 A
4B3 317 816 B

Confused myself - my car is 10/05/2003 date of first registration.

Oops sorry, bit tired.

According to the link I sent, it should be:

4B3 317 815 C
4B3 317 816 C

Or items 1 & 4.

Now in the schema, item 4 (816C) seems to suggest another connection further back, but that pipe isn't tagged. It's tough to say if that's the correct Part #.

Item 1 (815C) is definitely correct according to the diagram
