Refurb time

Post by Foxmeister » Thu Aug 18, 2022 3:57 pm

So I had some issues with the caliper bleed nipples around a year back when it was discovered they were seized, I had a garage look at them and apply heat, but they said no joy also, not long after it was due an MOT and passed fine on brakes so it was left for a while

Until last week, short drive to the gym, all fine, leave the gym, now pedal feels like it’s dropping… took the car up to work to inspect and found one of said nipples was leaking, took a spanner to it and was free, weird, but I had replacement ones in the car from back then so tried a new nipple as old were rounded etc, but unfortunately a thread stripped out when doing some bleeding, bastard, almost a free repair on an RS6, unheard of

Anyway, decided they were coming off and getting sent away for a full strip and rebuild with powder coat etc aswell as the nipples need done

It looks to have Pagid pads in currently, am i right in assuming these are the standard pads or should they have Audi logo on them?

I found these to be quite bad in dust terms, but i have also found at least 2 pistons arent fully retracted, so possible seizing also

I would expect them to have the logo, perhaps they are the Pagid ones that ECP sell. If they are ECP ones they won't be the same compound as OEM.

The OE pads have no Pagid marking.

Good, in a way im glad

Like i said, these are very dusty and quite sticky, so although Pagid are usually a decent brand, i'll be changing these when rebuilding them anyway now

Pagid these days are just the same as any cheapo pad, unless they’re one of the racing models. Euro car parts bought the branding rights IIRC. I don’t know how it works with the branding but the only Pagid pads I’d touch are the RS.

The OE pads aren’t cheap but they are effective. And still cheaper than the equivalent racing pad.

Ok, i'll be going for standard pads again then

Do audi still sell them or are they easily found online? I'll have to have a gander now

Bought my last set of Genuine Audi pads online.
Full set for front and rear.
IIRC they were advertised on EBay.
And yes they were expensive.

Also interested on who refurbs your calipers and the price they charge.
I have a set that needs to be refurbished. Similar problem to yours. Bleed nipple threads on the caliper damaged.

Steve, i am sending mine to a company called Godspeed Brakes, have saw previous work and finish was really good, pricing is fair also, its £400 for a standard strip and rebuild with powdercoat colour finish, then extra works are chargeable, so its £80 per nipple thread repair work etc, if you email and speak to Ian, he will advise you better im sure

Cheers for that mate.
Will give them a call.
I am not in any hurry as I had new phaeton 8 pot calipers installed when my original calipers failed.
Really pleased with them.
Grizz recommended and installed them.

I'm not a fan of coloured calipers, but that looks like a top job. Did they do the RS logo unprompted?

As for the pads, there are some good Brembo pads and some completely crap ones made from floor sweepings. There was a discussion recently on alternatives to OE pads. I found the DS2500 to be pretty good but they're not technically road legal.

/Also, IIRC the RS4 b7 pads are identical. You could try to see if those are available at Audi / TPS.
