Hi Jay,
I 've recently had my power steering pump rebuilt at a cost of £360 by https://www.facebook.com/Powersteeringservices/ in Greenwich.
I don't know yet how good a job they did, Grizz at unit29 will be replacing the very cheap (only one availiable at the time) 'new' one I bought last year which squeeks too much.
Grotty looking place, but they only seem to do steering and have been going a long time and seemed to know what they were talking about.
Might be worth taking it there for an opinion??

Are you sure it’s the rack.
Are you losing power steering fluid.
I had a leaking power steering hose. Which eventually drained the reservoir starving the power steering pump.
That in turn made some dreadful noises.
Hoses replaced and problem resolved.
Did have to move the engine out of the way though to get access to the rack and hose unions.

Update

Rebuilt pump installed by unit 20 ( so I know it was done properly) appears not to work properly - discussion ongoing. At this point I cannot recommend Power steering services.

Fortunately pump is doable engine in and lock carrier in service position. I am running a TRW remanufactured one and it has been fine. :)

Matt,
Thanks for the recommendation. A TRW ordered and Power Steering Services are saying they will refund the cost of the rebuild, time will tell if they keep their promise.
Unfortumatley it's beyond my capabilities to do the swap myself, so a job for my local guys at Volkstec as it's not practical to go 400 miles to unit 20.
Update to follow in due course.

I did a how to on it a while ago, if useful. There’s just one tricky bolt.

Ric - My guys have garage at Harrow, would have done it for you properly. Proper VAG specialist and do a lot of S/RS Audi's. Including DRC repairs.
