Guess what's leaking now!

Post by srichards » Mon Jun 13, 2022 5:00 pm

Joy of it passing the MOT with no advisories was short lived. It's leaking oil on the exhaust and making a stink. Don't know exactly where from yet so I wondered if anyone wanted to guess the leak location for a bit of diversion and to look smug if they're right

I'm hoping it's somewhere really easy to get at... It's still at the garage as it was in for the MOT and the gearbox service (PRND was lit up like an Xmas tree last week so  )

Place your bets...

If it really stinks it's probably from an output shaft on the gearbox.

I hope it's not the same seal that leaked last time they did the gearbox service as it means they've learned nothing and didn't listen to my instructions to make sure the propshaft output seal was changed too because it was the one that popped before

What Hp sauce said. Nice easy fix.

Yeah. Had to have mine done last year.
Thankfully the shaft was ok and it was just the seal to replace.

Join the club, mine's got a similar problem.
Going to Grizz in a couple of weeks for sorting along with some regular maintenance.

Apparently it's the seal between the gearbox and the transfer box that is leaking. Waiting for the seal now. Hope it's not going to become whack a mole with other seals.

See if you can get the part numbers of what they replace. Could be useful info.

I'll try to get them. They don't often put them on the invoice annoyingly.

Most people never know when that seal is leaking because it doesn't leak to the outside of the assembly. It just leaks ATF into the transfer box and vice versa.

Transfer box output seal was the leaky git. Couldn't get part numbers as they'd already got the invoice sorted by the time I realised I'd missed them calling to say the car was ready. Doh.

That makes more sense. Glad it's sorted.

Probably got the part number on the invoice I got from Grizz.
That was the leak I had. Transfer box output oil seal.
Will have a look later.

From my invoice
3.5 hours labour to strip car to gain access to rear output shaft. Clean contaminated heat shields. Remove output shaft. Replace seal. Top up oil level and rebuild.
Labour £245.00
Seal £23.91
Seal Part no 01V 409 399 A

10:1 labour cost to part cost ratio. Sounds about right for an RS6.
