Onto the rears. I thought this was going to be similar to the fronts by just removing the two top mounts bolts and then the lower axel mounting bolt holding the coilover.

As my top mount bolts didn’t want to move I thought it best to consult Bentley. Apparently I need to dick about with some other bits and bobs to. Can you guys confirm if I will need to do this or does my original plan sound sufficient?

Have a look at my Bilstein tutorial in the FAQ.

Also be careful with the level sensors. Easy to break or get reversed.

Effectively I’m removing the rear arb? Might as well get that PC while it’s off.

Yeah. Very easy to remove anyway, so no reason not to.

It's good though isn't it. Makes rusty old crap like new again.

Probably going to be the only way to keep a lot of the stuff OEM on the car soon. I’ve been know to PC new parts as the OM PC isn’t very robust.

What about using a thread file to remove most of the crap. Can be very successful and they are not too expensive to purchase.
Used them many times to get me out trouble.

You need to know the correct pitch of the thread. If unsure measure the pitch of the thread with a set of thread gauges. Then buy a thread file with the right pitch.
I thought some of you might be interested in some feedback regarding that Draper thread file.

IMO it’s amazing! I wasn’t expecting it to be as effective with such minimal effort. As you’ve seen the inside threads on my coilovers are really bad, but with just a few passes with the file they’ve cleaned up as well as I could hope for. Don’t get me wrong, they’re far from mint but I’d be very surprised if, once the nuts are freed, they’re not useable.

Used them for years Chris. Versatile tool and can be used for 8 different thread sizes.
And at a very reasonable price.
Once cleaned up apply a light coating of grease with a paint brush.
The threads will look even better.
Pleased you are happy with the result.
Looking at the photos the threads have corroded quite badly. They must have been on the car for some years.
But looking at the cleaned up section. The threads should be usable mate.

Ps very nice work Chris.
Looking forward to a photo of the finished product.

I’ve a feeling that it’s game over on this restoration. I’d just started getting some rotation on the nut when “crack” and the cylinder starts rotating. If you look at the picture you can see that the seam has split.

Even if this split isn’t terminal, the only way to get the nut off now will be to cut it and replace as I’m not going to be able to grip the cylinder hard enough to rotate the nut without seriously damaging the cylinder.
