Gearbox oil and filter change

Post by steve2003rs6 » Wed Dec 15, 2021 12:14 pm

How often is it recommended to do a gearbox oil and filter change.
Should it be part of the annual service ?
Last year I think I did 3 or 4 changes and it was done again this year.
Initially my problem started with a crap o ring (undersized) on the filter causing all sorts of problems.
Then the colour of the new oil after a month or so of use.
So went “overboard” with oil and filter changes until I was happy with the oil being drained.

With a few members having TC and gearbox issues just lately. Its got me thinking about regular maintenance.

And obviously “sealed for life” is a total joke.

There's no ideal answer to this question. If you could put fresh ATF and filter on after every drive, that would be the ideal from a wear point of view but obviously completely impractical. You need to change it as often as you can afford / be bothered.

Same deal with engine oil.

Thanks Ben. So I reckon my annual service should include a gearbox oil and filter change in future.
All due in May next year and also 4 yearly cambelt change.
I better start saving up ?

If you can afford it. I suppose there are environmental considerations, too. How many miles do you do yearly?

Mine is my Daily driver. On average around 8 K glorious miles per year.
Currently Christine is approaching 120 K miles.
47K miles when I bought her in 2012.

You could change the ATF every year and the filter every other year maybe?

That sounds like a good compromise Ben.
Got my wish list in to Santa. Hope he turns up.
You still hoping for car cover ?

My wife is wishing ( or was it insisting ) for me to spend less on Christine.

This is what I normally do-mines due a guild change but I put less than 500 miles on it this year and I topped up about 2 litres when I changed over the coolers so I haven’t done it yet, more than likely do it in the next few months
